Dear Aspirant,

Firstly I would say that getting exposure in your family business is a good thing you did. Family business and for that matter being into business teaches you many things which a job cannot teach you at all. This experience will not go waste practically.

However, when you say that you wish to get into the open job market and work for other companies, you will be treated as a fresher. MBA International Business can land you in jobs related to EXIM and those companies which are into EXIM.

You will have to prepare a one page resume which should also speak about your involvement in the family business and should highlight your skills and traits apart from the education. Upload it on top job portals.

Just as a thought, why dont you think and explore for having you own separate business instead of job? If you have a little time and can devote it to a business idea, your experience in family business will come handy there.

Best wishes

Hello,

Since you have been the family business too, it will add great value to your resume. I am assuming you have taken greater responsibility and ownership in the family business compared to what you would have in a corporate set up. A stint in the family business gives you different sets of skills sets, responsibility and most importantly a different view of the entire business. Now that you are planning to go back to the job industry, these will be valued by the companies provided you articulate them on your resume properly. Make your sure you mention the following things in your resume in the work experience section for your stint in family business:

  • Designation
  • Job Description and Responsibilities
  • Revenue and profit generated, manpower handled, projects, initiatives, policy work(if any), training etc.
  • Any accomplishments for your business which helped it grow
  • Clients handled

Ensure that the impact you had on your family business clearly comes out in your resume.

Another thing you can do is enrich your LinkedIn profile. This will help you get better visibility in the corporate world. You can connect with people in your target industry, role and get recommendations from any clients that you dealt with during your stint in the family business.

Initially when you are applying, it would be better to make the switch to a

  • Similar industry: You are already familiar with your past industry (let's say automobile, steel etc.). It will not be difficult to make the switch to a different function within the same industry
  • Similar functions: You are quite familiar with how the function works (can be finance, HR, operations). It won't be difficult to move to a new industry in the same function because you have transferable skill sets.

Overall I would recommend you to do the following things:

  • Make a solid resume
  • Upload it on job portals
  • Make a solid LinkedIn profile
  • Take recommendations from people you have worked with
  • Connect and Network with your target industry or role

Hope that helps. All the best !!
