Marketing Manager

Glad to hear you are thinking of a transition from marketing to operations. But practically, I believe two years of marketing executive experience is not sufficient to take up this upgrade to operations management. To progress to an operations management level, you need to have ideally a three to five year marketing experience in a lead role and not in an executive role. However on the other side, I would advice you on two strategies that will take you to an operations manager role in SME's or start ups in the next two-three years.

1. Stick with the current company and move up the position:
Stick with your current company and work hard to progress from a marketing executive position to marketing manager or senior manager position. This might take upto a year or two but when you apply for operations manager profiles, ask yourself what would be preferred and look impressive - an executive role to operations manager or a marketing lead/ manager to operations manager. You should really progress on a scale of two years and this way you can look up for opertaions management roles provided you also strengthen your application with an academic qualification.

2. Strengthen your profile with top up academic qualification:
I earlier mentioned that continue working on this marketing role and progress with it within the next two years. I also told to strengthen your resume with sound academic degree. This means doing a part time concurrent course while you are working as a marketing executive. Please do not sign up for any distance education courses as they are never valued, appreciated or rewarded for a role like that of the operations manager.
You can therefore only choose to do a course part time where you attend weekend classes or weekday after business hours classes. Most of the courses are run either one or two years. Also studying at a top tier premier institute is equally important. I have well researched on the suitable courses for you that are offered by top tier business schools in India . Here they are,
  • IIM Calcutta : They offer a course well suited for your profile and this is one of the very popular course in India known asExecutive program for young managers EPYP program. This is a part time course and you can attend weekend classes. Completing this you can be progressed into senior manager roles into marketing within the same company or probably get an operations manager role in a start up company.
  • IIM Khozhikode : They offer Executive postgraduate certificate in operations management. This is again a part time course and you only attend after hours daily or weekend classes.
  • IIM Lucknow: They offer two courses suitable for you. Executive program in sales and marketing managementand Executive program for young managers.
  • XLRI Jamshedpur: They offer one program known as Post graduate certificate in sales and marketing management.

These four business schools offer the above part time courses for working professionals like you. Completing the program you become an alumni of the school and you get better chances of networking that will increase your corporate connections and job opportunities.

I would finally recommend you to continue with your existing marketing profile and also study one of the courses that I have mentioned above. You will soon make your way to marketing manager or senior manager by the time you complete your studies and you are then good for applying to Operations role. Hope this helps. All the very best.
