Dear Toshi,

Good to know that you want to make a career in academics.

To be a lecturer in college a post-graduate degree in the subject and B.Ed. is required

» To be a professor a Ph.D. degree is must with three years experience as lecturer / assistant professor.

» Also to teach in colleges one have to qualify the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by University Grants commission (UGC)

You can read more about it here: https://ask.careerguide.com#54!Teaching

You can also try becoming a visiting faculty at your own almamater or a college near by.

All the Best

Nice to hear you are interested in doing a career in academics. From your inquiry, I see you are an MBA HRM graduate. Well, if you wanted to focus on a career in academics- then it is teaching and research at universities and private management organisations.

I can suggest you two options to embark on a career in the academia.

1. MPhil - HRM:
As you have studied an MBA in HR, you can probably try for an MPhil degree in human resource management. This course is run mostly full time and is of one year duration. Completing this degree, you can be qualified to work as an Assistant lecturer in any Bschool or a management college. To be qualified for an MPhil admission, you should have studied a two year post graduate course plus have qualified national eligibility test, popularly known as the NET.

Please note: There are some colleges who consider MBA degree as an eligible two year postgraduate course where as most of the colleges might be only okay with an MSc degree. This varies from one college to another so you will have to individually check with the university/ college admissions board if your MBA degree is acceptable in place of a mandatory two year postgraduate course.

You sould enrol for the NET test and pass it to be eligible for an MPhil admission. This test is conducted twice a year in July and December. You should look up for the NET test application advertisements on local newspapers and MHRD website. So prepare well for the test and qualify it with a minimum of 65% although a 70% and above is good.

An MPhil is one of the shortest route to get into the academia as the course is only of one year duration unlike any other postgraduate or doctoral courses. If you cannot invest many years into studying then an MPhil is a wise option.

2. PhD Management degree:
A PhD is a Doctoral degree, and highly reputable. On completion of the degree you are given the prefix Dr in front of your name. It is studied minimum three to four years full time and some five to six years by part time. Distance courses are mostly not available and infact not advisable at all. My best advice would be to enrol on a full time PhD program rather than a part time PhD program. Finish it off quickly and start working early, rather dragging it for years throgh the part time route.

Admission for a PhD Management is on two criteria.
1. a post graduate qualification - yes, MBA is definitely acceptable.
2. an eligibility entrance test - GATE/ CAT/ NET/ GRE/ GMAT tests.

PhD Management could be studied at any of the IIT's, IIM's, ISB Hyderabad or any university in India. You should appear for an entrance test based on the university/ Bschool you are planning to study at.
Here is the eligibility as per the college:
IIM's - CAT test, MBA % and a pass with good score in their written test on interview day.
IIT's - GATE test, MBA % and pass with a good score in their written test on interview day.
ISB Hyderabad - either GRE or GMAT exam only.
Any other college/ university - NET qualified plus MBA with a first class % (some colleges may also have a PhD written interview test)

So with these, you can apply for a PhD and on completion you can directly start from a Senior lecturer or an Assistant Professor position. Good luck.
