CAT preparation as well as other entrance tests like CAT or SAT etc requires practice. The more you practice, the better well equipped you would be in cracking the exam.
Not only solving papers but understanding the logic behind it and finding the shortcut is an essential ingredient to a high percentile. The mantra is solved maximum questions correctly in a short period of time.
As far as previous years papers are concerned, there are CAT preparations books available which claim to have attached 5 years papers. They will definitely be helpful. Joining coaching classes will help you learn the concepts.
Currently, solve papers to understand the concepts and understand the logic and develop your shortcuts. But as the exam approaches begin to time yourself.
