The pharmacist is one of the dispensable careers in the healthcare industry. A pharmacist can work for a  chemist shop, a community or a hospital as per his own choice. He has the responsibility to prepare and distribute over the counter medicines prescribed by the doctor. They have to make sure that patients perfectly get to know about how and when to take the prescribed medicines. They are responsible for the prevention of interactions due to dangerous drugs medications. They can have a bright career in the research field as well.

Various institutes provide diploma, master or bachelor degree courses in various fields of pharmacy. All the courses should be accredited by Pharmacy council of India (PCI) /General Pharmaceutical Council (GphC) / All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Academic Courses:

Education in Pharmacy involves three levels of education:

Diploma Courses: 

After completing +2 exams having subjects PCM (Physics, chemistry, maths) or PCB (Physics, chemistry, Biology) One can opt for various diploma courses related to Pharmacy as per his interest from the following:

  • Pharmacy
  • Pharmacy assistant
  • Pharmacy Technician

After completion of diploma courses, one can directly admit to the 2nd year of bachelor's degree program. He has to complete only 3-years of graduation period.

Bachelor degree Courses:

Bachelor degree in pharmacy is a 4-year full-time regular course for the candidates who have passed their senior secondary subjects with biology or bioscience as main subjects. Various institutes give admission to the aspirants based on the recent results of WBJEE or JEE(Main). One can opt for any of the specialized course as follows:

  • Bachelor in Pharmacy
  • Bachelor in Physiology and Pharmacology
  • Bachelor in Pharmaceutical Engineering
  • Bachelor of pharmaceutical science

Master's degree Courses:

Achieving a master degree is a 2-years full-time degree program offered in various areas related to pharmacy. After completing B.Pharmacy, one can choose any of the following options for getting into higher studies in pharmacy education:

  • Master of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
  • Master in Pharmacology
  • Master in Pharmaceutics
  • Master in Pharmaceutical Engineering
  • Master in Forensic toxicology
  • Sc in drug innovation
  • Sc in Clinical Pharmacology

Doctorate courses:

Pharma D is a 4-year doctorate course in Pharmacy to give wings to your career as a doctor or a research scientist.

Training Process:

Several institutes provide 1 or 2 years practical training program to the students after completing their various levels of degree courses in Pharmacy. These training courses are based on specialization of the related field.

Skill Requirements:

Along with academic qualification, a pharmacist should develop some extra skills to get bright opportunities in any of the sectors related to this field. One should focus on the key points as follows:

  • Knowledge of maths and science subjects
  • Develop clinical and interpersonal skills
  • Attentive and accurate while performing in details
  • Communication and soft spoken skills
  • Administration and organization capability
  • Ability to set priorities
  • Knowledge of business skills to work for a community
  • Basic knowledge of computer is required to keep electronic records.

Licensing and certification:

 According to Indian pharmacy Act of 1948, To start practice as a pharmacist, one should acquire registered licensing or certification governed by Pharmacy Council of India. If one wants to run a pharmacy business it's mandatory for him to get a drug licensing certificate of any of the two types:

  • Retail Drug License (RDL): This license is required to run a general chemist shop. A small fee needs to be submitted from those aspirants who had completed their diplomas or degrees.
  • Wholesale Drug License (WDL): This license is required for those people who are interested in dealing with wholesale business related to drugs and medicines.

 

Job Prospects:

After completing diploma or degree courses one can get the job in various government or private sectors, health organizations, hospitals, and clinics. One can work as an entrepreneur by selling drugs at his own medical store.

Higher degree related to pharmacy, give opportunities to be the part of various MNC's all over the world. One can connect to the various big brands such as Dr. Reddyy, Ranbaxy, Appolo pharmacy, Glaxo, SmithKline, Johson&johnson and many other pharmaceutical companies.

One can give rise to his career after completing Masters or a doctoral degree in various fields of specialization and research fields. One can get his remuneration depending upon his job designation, locations, skills, and experience. A career as a pharmacist is vast and give several opportunities to have future success.
