'' The building industry has a poor reputation for the manner in which its individual communicate with one another.'' writes Stephen Emmitt in his book 'Architectural Management in Practice'.

It's highly important to have excellent communication skills if you are working as an Architect. The success of any building depends on the team work of individuals from different backgrounds such as , architects, engineers, sub-contractors, consultants, suppliers, investors and of course the key player as the client. Being the leader of the team, the verbal communication skills of architects shall be strong enough to be able to co-ordinate, interpret and resolve queries between the team members.

Following is an interesting study of a young architect at work in the design office ,his actions were concerned with communication in the following ways:

Drawings & associated activities : 33.4%
Discussion/verbal communication : 31.1%
Miscellaneous : 12.1%
Thinking : 9.5%
Information seeking : 7.6%
Letters & written communication : 6.3%
(ref: architectural management in practice by Stephen Emmiti in information network -page no 58)

Be it business related communication like profile of firm, correspondences, feasibility reports, etc. or be it marketing related communication like websites, brochures, drawing and visual presentation, etc; architects require communication skills for wide range of categories in their day to day activities.

Hi,

Greeting's for the day!!!

Architects are the real creators of amazing building and structures. Skyscapeers in metro cities would have not been possible whiout them. While capatalism furthers the growth and prosperity of human race, tall buildings with beautiful designs and glory show the grandeur. The rebuilding of 'Twin Towers' collapsed in the 9/11 incident and the other toweres and structures hows the real dint of human talent and excellence, creativity and vision.

Required Personal / Professionals Skills:
A person requires sound Interpersonal & Communications Skills and immense physical stamina to get into the profession of architecture. He is expected to work on desk as well as on the construction site. Excellent memory and sound concentration level, flexibility, patience, team spirit, responsibility, and accountability, etc. are some common personality traits which are essential for professional successin architecture and design. But it is the right credentials in academics which matters the most in architecture.

Job Prospects:
Architects can work with construction companies wherein they are aske to serve as a designer. Initially an architect is expected to understand specific requirements of clinets and strike a right balance between aesthetics and practicality. Additionally, an architect with skills can help clients by his ideas in terms of balancing the requirements of appearance, financial budget and time frame. Some architects even work independently and earn their livelihood through consultancy fees which entirely depeneds upon the skills and profile as well as work experience.

Most of the jobs in architecture come up in government organizations such as Public Works Department, the Archaelogical Department, Ministry of Defence, National Building Organization, Town and Country Planning Organization, National Institute of Urban Affairs, Departments of Railways, Post and Telegraphs, Public Sector Undertakings, Housing and Urnad Development Corporation, National Building Construction Corporation Ltd, etc. While some other organizations or bodies like State Departments, Housing Boards, Local Bodies for Constuction Work, Builders, Architecture Firms, Consultants, etc also hire architects.

Architects working independenetly have ample scope in terms of earnings. However, the inherent hazards with independent practice is that the professional undergoes lots of work as he alone has to plan details of sizes, specification, and estimates of the cost of the structure.

Further doubts or queries feel free to contact.

Rahul.
