Hello student,
Ophthalmology is the study of eyes. An Ophthalmologist ?is a medical practitioner who specialises in the treatment of diseases related to the eyes. In order to become an Ophthalmologist one needs togain a post graduate degree or diploma in Ophthalmology after completing a basic medicine degree or MBBS.

As you need to do atleast MBBS, biology is essential. It is a necessary qualification required to appear for the relevant entrance tests as well. In addition, a deep knowledge of biology is essential to understand the physiological and anatomical structures in the body as well as understand the biological processes, structures and functions in the body. Biology is also an essential element of pathology, or understand how diseases affect the body, the micro-organisms involved, how they react in the human body, etc.

In sum, Biology is the most important element of medical education, therefore, for any field related to the medical sciences, a sound understanding of the same is essential.

I hope this information answers your query.
All the best!

Nandini
