Before I begin to answer your query.Let me first ask you are you aware the type of work done by a geologists.
In simple laymans term, they are the ones who study the habitat, whether natural resources, topography or the land or ocean beds and inform about changes happening and research on them.
As such to be able to research on the earths surface, even private enterprises will require the government authorities.
Generally a geologists is seen working with government related organizations like Oil and gas company, petroleum firms, engineering firms and so on.
Thus as per my knowledge, the scope for a geologists is more with government related organizations than a private setup.
