The role of a Chef has changed quite a lot over the years and it's still changing 1. The role of a Chef is not restricted to the kitchen only. Previously, this used to be the case but as the hotel management practices grew with time, the role became more challenging and involved a number of other tasks other than cooking. In future one will have to do multiple tasks and not just the cooking part in order to succeed as a Chef. They need to travel a number of places and cannot just recstrict themselves to the kitchen.2. Initially the management skills were not that important for the role of a Chef but these have become very important now.

Specially in the big hotels where the kitchen staff is quite large in number, it can be challenging to manage them and take work from them effectively. Therefore, even Chefs go for management courses like MBA these days. Going forward, it will be an additional advantage to have good management skills. 3. The communication skills have become quite important these days. They were not as important earlier. There are two reasons for that - the kitchen staff was limited and the customers were mostly local. Now in today world and in the times to come - there are diverse people in the kitchen staff. Also because of the globalization one has to interact with people of different parts of the world. In this context, the communication skills become really important.4. The Chefs need to do a lot of research now a days. Earlier, there was not much research required. They mostly worked on fixed recipes. But it has changed gradually to survive in the competitive world. One has to come up with new ideas and methodologies to create new flavors and recipes. They are supposed to bring in more innovation in the food. Thus, the role of a Chef has changed quite a lot. far more challenging and far more interesting than it had been before. And it will continue to grow with time.
