To reconfirm if you are taking up the right decision, please visit this website once to take up the Online Psychometric Test. This test will read your personality and suggest you the right career options and check if it also suggests you to become a software engineer.

Chartered Accountant

To become a software engineer, you need to have studied maths and computer science as compulsory subjects until HSC level. Therefore at school until 12th level,

1. You should have chosen to study PCCM - Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Computer science. Maths is a very important subject in this group, as this is the only eligibility that will aid you to study an Engineering degree in computer science at college level. Therefore with a PCCM subject at school, you can study
  • BE/ BTech Computer science at college.
  • You can also opt to study BTech Information technology course. These engineering degrees run for about four years.

Completing this BE/ BTech degrees, you are a software engineer and therefore choose to work for any technology companies in India. If you want to study further, you can choose to do the following master course pathways:
  • ME/ MTech Computer science
  • MTech Information technology
Both these above mentioned two degrees last for a duration of two years.

2. Students may also choose to study PCC - Physics, Chemistry and Computer science (this group does not include maths). If you choose this group, then you may not be eligible to study an Engineering degree like the BE/ BTech at college level. However this PCC group will lead you to study three year arts based courses like the BSc degrees. Therefore you can choose to study any of the three following courses.
  • BSc Computer science
  • BSc Information science
  • BSc Information technology
  • BCA Bachelor of computer applications

The above mentioned bachelor degrees run for about three years and completing this degree, you may be offered Software Engineer roles in technology companies. However, if you would like to study further, you may also choose the following master study pathways.

  • MSc Computer science
  • MSc Information technology
  • MSc Information science
  • MCA Master of computer applications
  • Almost the first three degrees mentioned above are for two years duration and the last degree mentioned, MCA is of three year duration.

As you have mentioned your desire to become a Software Engineer, choosing PCCM at school level and then studying a BE/ BTech Computer science is the most desirable route. As completing an Engineering degree will certainly qualify you to be a Software engineer.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

Software engineers have good scope in terms of development of software or programming. From computer operating systems to "video" games all require software and there comes the needs of software engineers.

The main role of a Software technician is to analyse the users needs and then help to design, tests and develop software by applying computer technologies and mathematical concepts.

As said Software's require a thorough knowledge related to computers and maths, so to become a Software engineer, you need the base of computers and mathematics.

Thus post 12th, any stream but having studied Maths, you could opt for

  • BSc IT
  • BCA

But if you are interested in Engineering, then for 12th, you would've to opt for Science stream with a combination of PCM ( Physics, Chemistry, Math).

Pot 12th, would have to clear various entrance exams to secure admission in an engineering college of your choice.

The only difference between a Computer Science graduate and a Computer engineer, would be that as a engineer you would be involved in the process of developing an running a software whereas as a computer science graduate, you would be mainly into applications of the made software.

Also remember, that since there are new development happening in the fields of computes, you need to keep yourself updated regularly. through certificates and diploma programs.

Choose wisely and then decide...

All the very best....
