Feeling healthy in your skin plays a vital role in building a confident personality. Dermatology is the study of skin, hair, nails and associated disorders. A dermatologist is an expert in diagnosing and treating skin related disorders. Diseases that they treat include skin cancers, acne, psoriasis, nail infection, cysts, birthmarks, rosacea, fungal infections, and eczema. They can also enhance the appearance of their patients in many ways by helping them to keep wrinkles at bay, removing age spots and some other signsof aging, lightening acne scars etc.

 

Responsibilities of a Dermatologist

  • Patiently listening to patient’s problems and offer diagnosis and treatment options to those who are willing to improve their skin conditions.
  • Performing medical treatment such as botox injections, laser skin hair removal, collagen fillers, skin tightening, chemical peels, enteropathy and microdermabrasion
  • Some dermatologist also performs tattoo removal, treatment of hyperhidrosis and hair loss.
  • Working long hours, having good communicational, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Performing medical procedures such as cryotherapy, biopsies, removal of skin lesion etc.
  • Educating patients about basic skin care and hair care methods.

How to become a dermatologist

The minimum eligibility to go for specialization in dermatology is MBBS.A science student of PCB with English securing at least 50% marks for general category, 40% marks for SC/ST and OBC category is eligible to apply for entrance exam for admission in MBBS conducted by various states and your main focus should be on scoring well in:

  • AIPMT (All India Pre Medical Test)
  • AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences)
  • JIPMER  (Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research)

After completing MBBS, one could go for different courses that are available at different levels and for different durations for someone who wish to specialize in dermatology.

  • Diploma in Dermatology (2 years)
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Dermatology, Venerology& Leprosy (2 years)
  • Master of Science in Dermatology, Venereology &Leprology (2 years)
  • Bachelor of Science in Dermatology (3 years)
  • Doctor of Medicine in Dermatology & Venereology  (3 years)
  • Door of Philosophy in Dermatology & Venereology  (3 years)

Therefore there are numerous jobs awaiting fresh dermatologist at all times, providing immense career opportunities.

A dermatologisthas the option to work either in government hospitals or in thedermatology department of well reputed public hospitals such as AIIMS, etc. If someone is willing to work independently they can open their own clinic.

Apart from treating hair and skin ailments a dermatologist also suggests diet and exercise plans to their patients and guide them to live a healthier life improving their overall health conditions which also turns out to be very beneficial for their skin.

Remuneration of Dermatologist            

All the medical professions promise highly paid work position. A dermatologist working in a government hospital could easily expect to be paid around 40 – 50k on amonthly basis which depends on their experience. An experienced dermatologist working in a corporate sector can expect to be paid somewhere around 60-80k per month.
