Skills that are needed to become a good physical therapist:

For those who are aspiring to become a successful physical therapist must possess some basic skills like the person must have basic intelligence and good grasping power. They must have good observation skills which will help them understand the problem that the patient is facing. Based on the problems that the patient is facing they must be able to plan out a proper treatment program for the patient. One has to keep in mind that this job requires a lot of standing; therefore the person must have a good physical stamina and the capacity to stand for long hours. They must have good communication skills and must be good motivators. Only then they will be able to connect with the patients and infuse positivity into the patient. They must also have the ability of critical thinking. They must be active listeners and good learners. They must have problem-solving skills and must be good in time management. A good physical therapist must have good motor skills only then he will be able to give proper manual therapy to the patients.

Steps involved in becoming physical therapist:

  • First one needs to complete a bachelor degree programme in biology or anatomy or chemistry or physics or physiology.
  • Then one needs to enroll in a physical therapy degree programme. The courseware normally involves subjects like applied physical therapy, anatomy, pharmacotherapy etc.
  • In countries like US one needs to complete the licensing requirements. These licensing requirements will depend on the State. One needs to check with the State board for the licensing requirements.
  • Completion of a residency programme and board certification are optional but will be of added advantage.

Where can one enroll for physical therapy programmes?

There are several good universities which offer physical therapy programmes. Some of these programmes also have an internship, which helps the candidate get on the job training. A number of good online physical therapy programmes are also available. What one needs to keep in mind is that even after completing the programme, the person must have the willingness to upgrade his skills and learn new things from time to time if he wants to become a good physical therapist.

Responsibilities’ of a physical therapist:

The responsibilities of a physical therapist are as follows:

  • Preparing for the therapy session by cleaning the area and arranging for all the required equipment.
  • Observing the response of the patients during the therapy sessions and making notes of the responses. These notes are used by the physical therapist to understand the progress of the patient.
  • If the patient is suffering from a total disability, then the physical therapist will be required to assist the patient in moving from one therapy area to the other.
  • The main duty of the physical therapist is to work towards improvement of the motor skills of the patient

Job prospects for a physical therapist:

A qualified and good physical therapist can get opportunities to work in hospitals and rehabilitation centers. There are also job openings for physical therapists in nursing homes, orthopedic clinics and private clinics. Once a physical therapist gets a good experience he or she can always have their own physical therapy clinic. The salary that one can get as a physical therapist is pretty good.
