In this job you have to study various animals and the way they live in their natural habitat, as well as observe and study their behavior when in captivation or in laboratories. A zoologist is an expert in the scientific and systematic study of the function, structure, form and distribution of animal life. A zoologist basically concentrates on the study of animal’s behavior, origin, structure, conditions, diseases and life process. Human beings have become aware of the need and importance of the animal kingdom in the ecosystem, due to which there is an increased demand of  Zoologists.

Working effectively, independently or as a part of a team is must in this profession. Patience, self-discipline, good communication, and good physical stamina are some other required qualities. Having all of these makes you a perfect aspirant to follow the career path of a zoologist. You have to be able to think quickly and effectively in dangerous and emergency situations. Having some basic qualities and acquiring proper qualification can produce a capable zoologist from an aspirant.

 

Responsibilities of a zoologist

  • A Zoologist is expected to study not only animal behavior but also animal diseases, reproduction, feeding habits, life process etc.
  • To plan research, interpret and analyze data and write reports.
  • To be patience, persistent and being able to concentrate for long hours. Having good communication, interpersonal and decision making qualities.
  • To be able to develop and test new drugs in order to improve agricultural crops and livestock; pest control and diseases, taking right steps to conserve endangered species and habitats for animal welfare.

You have to be a science student with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as compulsory subjects. Minimum 50% percentage is required in 12th board exams in aggregate in the concerned subjects.

A zoologist has the opportunity to work as a zookeeper, curator, and director. A zookeeper is responsible for the daily hands-on care of animals. Directors are responsible for fund raising and public relations while curators supervise the functioning of the zoo and the acquisition of animals.

The salary of a zoologist depends upon their academic qualifications and reputation of the institute or university from which degree is attained and the amount of experience that they gained from volunteering for various places while their education.
