Dr. Anand has well explained the steps to do PhD. Apart from other career experts said, I am sharing my perspectives to complete PhD.
Take ownership: Whether the research idea is your own, or the topic is provided by your research guide, take ownership of your research. Be focused and put systematic efforts
Write up as you are going: I am always surprised when PhD students, who are in the third year and tell me that they haven't written anything. They feel daunted and overwhelmed by the huge task of writing. Develop a draft of three chapters, Introduction, Literature Review, and Methodology before you begin data collection. Write results chapter when you have collected the data and analyzed them.
Avoid perfectionism: Completed PhD is better than perfect. Many students are not able to complete PhD within timeline. Perfection, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
Have a plan for life post PhD: You can find a job and plan for post phd. There are various fellowships by UGC/ICSSR/ICMR to do Post doctorate. Collect information about them and apply.
Publication: Publish at-least two articles before you submit PhD thesis. In some university, it is mandatory to publish at-least two articles .
Hope this infomation is useful. If you still have queries, feel free to write back.
Best Wishes,Apurva Kumar, PhD
