Indian Armed Forces

India has one of the largest and the strongest defense forces among all the nations. Being a part of such a proud institution is itself an achievement in itself. The Indian Armed Forces consists of three branches, the Indian Army, Indian Air force & Indian Navy. The Indian armed forces are again divided on the basis of region they work in & the kind of operation. India has around 1,325,000 active frontline personnel & 21, 43,000 active reserve personnel. With this number, India stands 4th in the list of 126 countries with the most powerful armed forces. For every field, there is an entrance in the Defense Forces for graduates including field of law.

Law graduates can enter defense forces through Services Selection Board. The "Combined Defense Services Examination (CDS) for recruitment into the Indian Military AcademyOfficers Training AcademyIndian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy.  This is conducted by Union Public Service Commission twice during a year. When selected the interview is taken by SSB. SSB is like an entrance test for the position of Judge Advocate General. Notification is issued for JAG entry based on the vacancies. Judge Advocate General is a branch of Indian Army which recruits legally qualified lawyers.

Eligibility

  • Males who are married or unmarried while females whoa re unmarried can apply for this position.
  • Both three-year & five-year professional courses are allowed with a minimum of 55% marks after completion of 10+ 2 examination
  • University should be a recognized by the Bar Council of India.
  • They should be Indian nationals.
  • This is a Short Service Commission in Indian Army.
  • Candidates must be between 21 to 27 years.
  • Candidates must also be eligible for registration in Bar Council of India or State.

Writing test:

This is conducted by UPSC only. Here there are two types of test; the one we are concerned with is for officer’s training academy. This is an objective type test, with two sections English & General Knowledge, total 200 marks, 100 marks each. Exams are held in the month of February & August.

Then there is the SSB process where various authorities scan you & your potential. This is done in various stages. SSB is basically a psychological test where they test your leadership skills. They are searching for tough personalities who can follow strict order & discipline. Discipline being an important aspect of army life, should be present in every officer. It’s all about attitude. It’s all about courage & ability to lead. Recruiting Directorate, Integrated HQ of Ministry of Defense (Army)  does the initial listing and the decision of DG Recruiting will be final.

Interview:

In interview, they will also ask you legal question but that’s obvious. It is one of the most difficult and strict interviews. Candidates are not only judged on their intelligence level but also their sharpness, leadership quality, ability to handle intense pressure & intense situations. This interview also is done to figure out the mental ability of the applicant.

 

Training:

 

 

If they think that the candidate is mentally fit capable of projecting a strong will & leadership quality they are sent for training to different training center around India. Selected trainees are trained like any other soldier. Their training program is same as the soldier training program. If you are or were a sport person in your school days, you may not face a lot of problems, but if not it becomes a lot more difficult for you. You may have to try harder. But it’s not impossible. After training, they are posted in different Army Posts.

Role in Defense:

They are legal advisors to the Defense Forces. Advising to our commanders in military, discipline and other allied matters, is their main task. They are posted and then they get a course of Military Law and that is all they deal with for work. And yes, you get to wear a uniform all throughout their career in Army. They mainly deal with offenses committed by members of Army. So, if one likes criminal law then this is the place to be.

Judge Advocate General is a top position where you reach after a few years. First, you become Assistant Judge Advocate General & then you get promoted.
