Hello.
For working in a hospital by taking psychology these are various career options available for you. One is of Psychiatrist and another is of Clinical Psychologist . Many a times psychiatrist and clinical psychologist are taken as similar terms. But there lies a difference. A PSYCHIATRIST IS A MD IN PSYCHIATRY WHO CAN PROVIDE MEDICATIONS TO THE CLIENTS.FOR BECOMING A PSYCHIATRIST YOU SHOULD HAVE CLEARED YOUR XIIth BY SCIENCE, BIOLOGY AS YOUR SUBJECTS. THEN YOU HAVE TO GIVE ANY MEDICAL ENTRANCE EXAM AND GO FOR M.B.B.S. WHICH IS A 5.5 YEARS COURSE WHICH INCLUDES INTERNSHIP.IT IS PREFERABLE THAT YOU DO PG IN PSYCHIATRY. DOING MD WONT BE ENOUGH YOU HAVE TO EARN WORKING EXPERIENCE AND GAIN FURTHER DEGREES LIKE DIPLOMA IN PSYCHIATRIC MEDICINE (DPM).FOR BECOMING A GOOD PSYCHIATRIST YOU SHOULD HAVE THEORETICAL AS WELL AS PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE. WITH THIS YOU HAVE TO BE PATIENT LISTENER, EMPATHETIC, ACCEPTANCE OF THE CLIENT AS HE/SHE IS, EMOTIONALLY AND MENTALLY STRONG. Now clinical psychologist is a one who can't provide medications but can provide various psychotherapies, counseling to the clients, takes case history of the client and conducts various psychological tests on the client to know exactly about the disorder the client is having. He/she is the one who makes a plan of action for the client. For becoming a clinical psychologist you have to do BA/B.Sc (Hons) psychology,M.A./M.Sc (Clinical Psychology), M.Phil (Clinical Psychology)( Mandatory) and if you wish you can do Ph.D.(Clinical Psychology). After doing this you have to do internship and gain experience under a clinical psychologist/psychiatrist. After this you have to get yourself registered under Central Rehabilitation Register of Rehabilitation Council Of India .RCI will provide you a registration number which is mandatory for all clinical psychologists to have nowadays to work as a professional clinical psychologist. The personality traits are the same as that needed for psychiatrists. Now you have to decide as what option you have to opt according to your personality, till how many years you want to study, your family background, your work preferences and values, your interests and aptitudes. Both the professions are very excellent professions and both the pathways which I suggested will help you work in hospitals, private clinics and can open your own venture.
