I am a software engineer and want to switch to social sector preferably teaching..

I am thinking of pursuing MSW from IGNOU, will it be helpful career-wise? Or can you help me suggest something else if any?

The question here you need to ask yourself is what exactly is the area you wish yo work in???


Even if it is the Social work sector, do you wish to be a part of the team or do you wish to be a volunteer or do you wish to be the main person into the work done there.


Doing an MSW from IGNOU, sounds to be a good option. Since after the degree, you could be directly involved in the service sector.
Mainly would be involved into fighting for a cause, meeting the downtrodden people and trying to reach out to many people who want help and providing them the services required. You can begin by joining an NGO.

You can select from many like:
  • Education
  • Girl child education
  • Girl child rights
  • Trafficking
  • Addiction and drug abuse
  • Child marriage
  • Rape victims
Apart from this, you could be a part of the NGO gropu. Since you are a Software Gradute, you can mainly help by joining the team as a Software programmer.
Here you could help with your knowledge in software and help in managing the data.
Also if you have knowledge in Animations or Graphics, then you could help in terms of creating and promoting advertisements on the web or printing brochures and finding online help for the cause.
Also you could help in terms of online promotion.
In the meanwhile, you could use your knowledge to teach the people around too.

Another option is that, you could continue working as a Software engineer in the current organization that you are with. And on weekends, you could opt for being a volunteer with any of the NGO supporting the cause you wish to get involved in. eg. If teaching is your wish, then at weekends you could volunteer to teach at "The Teach India Foundation".

Depends on where you see yourself in the social sector, you could take a call.
But do think twice before making any decision.
