Hello There!

Today early morning I came across your question and felt fresh since I am an Economist. I am glad also to see you approach CareerGuide for seeking career guidance and I am sure that we experts can guide you and contribute positively in your career success.

I am an Educationist and an Economist. I have been counselling students from the fields of commerce / management / law / engineering for more than seven years now. I am also a nation wide published author and have written articles and research papers in reputed magazines and newspapers across the country.

I understand that you are doing HSC Commerce and you would like to make a career in economics. Since you are in commerce already there is Economics subject in all the years till final BCom year. This Economics is definitely a solid foundation you can build for your future career in Economics.

I do not know which University you belong too and according to my information, in BCom there is no Economics specialisation. Economics as a specialisation is only available in Arts that is BA or MA.

For your future career in Economics, I would suggest you to complete BCom with another specialisation of your choice. All subjects in BCom are important for your Economics masters also. After completion of BCom you can shift to Master of Arts (M.A.) in Economics from the same University. This shifting from commerce to arts field is allowed in all Universities in India. Due to this you will become MA Economics as a major.

However from where you complete your MA Economics is very important since there are few reputed Insitutes in India which offer MA Economics as a career. Institutes like Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, Delhi School of Economics, Gokhale Institute of Economics, Pune, Symbiosis School of Economics, Pune, University of Madras. These are the top Institutes in India from which you can pursue Economics as a career option, since they all give excellent placements and salary packages.

If you can manage to enter into one of these Institutes for MA Economics, your economics career will definitely be stable, high paying.

I would therefore suggest you to study hard and aim and have the ambition to get into one of these Institutes of high repute for MA Economics. Though you may complete MA Economics from your state University, job opportunities or career oportunities will be very average and you will have to find jobs on your own without any support from the University or college.

Best Luck and I am sure that one day I will see you as an Economist.
