Hello there

Thank you for choosing CareerGuide.com and writing to us. Pharmacy is an allied medical profession and it is indeed a reputable and highly recognisable career both in India and abroad. Especially pharmacy careers are well established in India due to its excellent medical facilities and resources. As a BPharm student, you can either graduate and go into pharmacy related careers or consider studying Master of Pharmacy. M.Pharm is a two year professional degree similar to ME/MTech courses. It does qualify you for highly responsible careers both in hospital, industries and research.

I shall brief in here on the type of careers one can pursue with a degree in BPharm or MPharm. There is not much difference between these two career pathways as both degrees will help students land up within the pharma sector as either at entry level or a little senior level.

So lets say why consider a Pharmacy degree?
The above pictogram will help you understand well, why study a degree in Pharmacy and how reputable the careers are with its offer. Apart from this, lets understand where students are likely to work with a pharmacy degree. Students are likely to land up in six sectors like hospitals, community, pharmaceuticals industry, private clinics, public health sector and academic teaching and research at universities.

Finally lets consider the career opportunities a Pharmacy degree can give you. As explained a pharmacist will work in either of these six sectors mentioned as above, but to go a little in-depth, a pharmacist role is split as either at a clinical setting or at a corporate/ industry level. A clinical setting job is always at hospitals, private dispensaries, private health clinics, pharmacy shops and public health sector. Where as a corporate role will give a job in pharmaceutical industry as a pharmacist, pharma technician pharma marketing, pharma advertising, pharma retail manager and professional services. Students can also consider working at educational institutions as a lecturer, professor or researcher in their interested area of research in pharma. To give you a big picture of the types of careers you can pursue, please see the attached picture here.

Students can also opt to study further after a Masters degree in Pharmacy. The next level of degree will be PhD Pharmacology. For a PhD admission, Masters degree in pharmacy plus UGC-NET, CSIR scores are required. Completing a PhD Pharmacology, you are a Doctorate can pursue your own research on medicines.

Hope this briefing helps. All the best.

Dear aspirant

Thank you for approaching counsellors at CareerGuide.com. Pharmacy is an interesting career and i am sure with a BPharm degree itself you can get to find excellent job scope in India. On this context I would rather advice to only choose to work as this will make your resume look good when you show some work experience. However if you are interested in doing an MPharm and then go to work, then please free to do it. MPharm is a nice route if you want to focus a career in education sector or even at resaerch and development sector.

Completing an MPharm degree, you can be qualified to work as a lecturer in colleges and a tutor in schools. It completely depends on your interest whether you want to take a tching line or a corporate line. Most of the students consider to teach after completing MPharm. For this you should appear and qualify either of the tests, UGC NET/ UGC SET or UGC LEC . exams. With a qualification from either of these exams, you can work as a lecturer. If you want to study a PhD like say in Pharmacology, then these qualifying tests are again important. For a PhD in Pharmacology one should have MPharm degree plus UGC NET/ CSIR score. Apart from this you should also get qualified by UGC JRF in order to get monthly stipend to support you through out your PhD program. Completing the PhD you are qualified to work as an assistant professor in colleges and universities.

If you are not interested in teaching line and are keen for corporate careers then you can choose to work for chemical manufacturing companies, pharmaceutical companies like the sun pharma, Mirra pharma, Dr Reddys lab, Glaxo smith kline and many more. You can also find jobs in biotech companies that manufacture medicines for certain medical treatments. You can also seek employment in drug manufacturing companies. Most importantly you can definitely seek employment in research and development department of any pharma company. These pharmacists in R&D department manufacture and design their own medical protocol.

Apart from this students can also choose to work as chemists in hospitals, dispensaries or private clinics. I personally know a candidate who works for a company at a research position on a full time basis and also work as a part time chemist in a private dispensary. Like this way you can also seek multiple career opportunities and this degree has so much to offer.
