I am pursuing a B.tech/M.tech dual degree in Biotechnology with a specialization in Food Technology, what are the various prospects for me?

As mentioned above, about my degree, I am confused over which field to choose as a career option, as what I need at the end of the day is a good amount of money as salary, but it seems as if, Biotechnology is not the suitable field catering my needs. What are the various career prospects available for me, as my degree is in Biotechnology, with a specialization in food technology, will it be able to provide me jobs as a food technologist? What will be a suitable option for me to pursue after completion of my degree course?

Hello friend, you have asked a good question, you are pursuing a degree program which has good future prospectus from job point of view. while taking admission in dual degree program, you might have something positive about biotechnology, that's why you chose this biotechnology subject.

My advice to you is, just concentrate on your degree and score good marks, if you do it halfheartedly and will remain in doldrums about future aspects then you will be no where.



The biotechnology is a research oriented field, so most of the work is carried out in research laboratories and research institutions. There are many private (multinational companies) which are carrying out research on biotechnology aspects.

The subject biotechnology finds application in number of fields, some of which are as;

Food Processing and Food Technology

Chemical Engineering

Drug Discovery, Designing and Manufacture

Food Technologists



After completing your MTech degree, you can seek job in many national as well as multinational companies. Since you are pursuing your degree program in specialization of Food Technology, therefore, you will have more chances to get jobs in Food based industries.



Otherwise there are many more companies such as Hindustan Lever Ltd, Thapar Group of industries, Indo American hybrid seeds, Bincon India Limited, IDPL, Bivcol, Indian Vaccines Corporation, Hindustan Antibiotics, Sun Pharma, Panacea Biotech, Dabur India Limited, Nestle, Cadila etc.



The salary provided by these industries is very decent and depends upon the experience and stream where a person works. A fresher usually gets a starting salary of Rs. 40,000 to 50,000 per month. I have many friends who hold a doctoral degree in Life Sciences stream and are working in private companies, after experience of 10-15 years they are getting a salary around 24 lakhs per annum.



You may also try job in academic field in governmental sector such as colleges, universities, research institutions, governmental laboratories. Here the entry level will at lecturer, Assistant professor or Assistant Scientist. The starting salary is in pay scale of Rs. 15600-37100 with and academic grade pay of Rs. 5400 per month.



This subject do have lots of job opportunities in USA, Canada, UK, Australia. Now it depends upon you where do you wish to make your career. A PhD degree after MTech will open better job avenues for you in governmental and private sector.
