Engineering is a wide subject of interest and knowledge for many. And Engineering has various branches that one can choose from. Material Science and Metallurgy is one such stream that the engineering offers. As you enter into the world of Engineering in Material Science and Metallurgy, you open wide career prospects for yourself. With diverging branches leading into various industries, one can find the scope of their future in any field relating to metallurgy and science. Some of the specific fields under this course which engineers focus on specifically are: ceramics, polymers, metals, solid-state physics, hydro-metallurgy/mining, biomaterials, building materials, aerospace computational MSE, and such related sectors.

Material Science and Metallurgy as a course is offered by various colleges in India. Following is the list of colleges and university that offer the course:

  • Indus Institute of Technology and Engineering (IITE), Gandhinagar, Gujarat
  • National Institute of Technology (NITDGP), Durgapur, West Bengal
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kanpur), Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh
  • National Institute of Technology (NITK), Surathkal, Karnataka
  • Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, Maharashtra
  • National Institute of Technology (NITT), Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Bombay), Mumbai, Maharashtra
  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras), Chennai, Tamil Nadu

These colleges are some of the best ones in the country with a huge scope of career in the field of metal science and metallurgy. Offering the four-year course of graduation, they give a basic knowledge about the components of metallurgy. However, after completing the course, one can also opt for post graduation in the same field or go for job opportunities too. One should make the choice totally on their convenience and career plan. Taking the studies further delves deeper into the subjects and give a better understanding and on the other side, taking up the job gives true experience in the real field of science and technology.

Career Opportunities:

As an intensely diverse profession, career in material science and metallurgy offers opportunities for people with great interest in science and engineering. After completing the bachelors, a metallurgical engineer can be employed in industries and enterprises that deal in manufacturing metals or metallic products.

Involved in materials production, or with engineering firms, the type of work also differs under metallurgy. One can also move onto consulting, management or sales. But the most common field chosen by engineers is aerospace manufacturing, architecture or engineering services, or semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. And the jobs are mostly entitled as manufacturing engineer, materials development engineer or process engineer. Following are some of the fields that are dedicated and can be chosen from:

Ceramic engineers: Developing ceramic materials and making them into useful products.

Composites engineers: Developing materials with engineered properties to be used as applications in aircraft and automobiles.

Metallurgical engineers: They specialize in steel and aluminum, usually in alloyed form with additions of other elements to provide specific properties.

Plastics engineers: Developing and testing new materials for new applications.

Semiconductor processing engineers: Applying principles of computing, sensing, and related applications.

A typical day in the life of a material science engineer involves the following:

  • To plan and evaluate projects
  • To prepare proposals, budgets, and perform managerial tasks
  • To supervise work of technologists, technicians, and scientists
  • To direct the testing of processing procedures
  • To monitor materials performance and evaluate deterioration
  • To determine failure of products and develop solutions

Job Prospects:

As a diverse profession, metallurgy offers career opportunities in a wide range dealing in technology, science, and engineering. Metallurgical engineers can find an opening in every industry or enterprise that deals in metals or metallic products. Typically commencing on a technical end in areas of manufacturing or research and development, metallurgical engineers usually bag a good salary package. And thus commanding good salaries, young graduates from metallurgical colleges can expect an exciting career ahead. Though actual salaries vary and depend on the type of industry, training experience, an average figure remains Rs 10-15 lakhs per annum.

Future of the metallurgical engineering lies in the manufacturing sectors as new and efficient materials are always in research and development. Also, the explosion of biotechnological and nanotechnological solutions is trending, thus making materials engineers have a vital role to play.
