Hello There! Your query is one of the most common one and confusion is also most common for graduates in choosing the right post graduation. I am happy that you decided to seek guidance from the experts of CareerGuide.


I am an Educationist and have been into career counselling for students from the engineering / law / management / commerce fields for more than seven years now. I am also into teaching Economics, Management, Current Affairs. I have been writing articles and research papers on various topics including career management for reputed magazines and newspapers across India.

From your query I understand that you wish to pursue an MBA. Therefore I take it that you have decided to pursue an MBA but are confused which specialisation and from which Institute to do an MBA.

Since you have already zeroed upon an MBA, you have already done the fifty percent of the effort. Now which specialisation to choose? You may know that an MBA is a management course. The famous specialisations in an MBA are Finance, Human Resource, Marketing, Operations and International Business.

Choosing an MBA specialisation is definitely a tricky job and should be done very seriously and with full information. However you will have to find out first that what is your liking area, as in do you like numbers, figures, calculations, etc? Do you like out door work, meeting people, selling something, do you have convincing ability, do you have perseverance? Do you like office jobs, do you like to train people, do you like to manage administration activities? Do you like to manufacturing activity? Do you like import and export business, do you like procedures, compliances, travelling, etc?

If you can answer to those questions and when you can answer more to any of the question, that can determine your specialisation stream.

If you are comfortable with numbers, calculations, then may be Finance specialisation is suited for you. If you like travelling for work, selling something, you have ability to convince people for a particular thing, then may be Marketing specialisation is for you. If you like office jobs, administration, recruitments, training, then may be Human Resource option is good for you. If you are an Engineer or a Science graduate, then may be you can opt for Operations specialisation. If you like international business acitivities, import export, procedures, etc. then may be International Business specialisation is suited for you.

I would here would like to suggest you to under the psychometric assessment for your self, which will tell you exactly what are your strengths, interests, weaknesses, abilities, etc. This is very important for choosing the right option of specialisation since once you choose and complete it is very difficult to shift or change jobs and that will make you frustrated.

As far as choosing from where to do an MBA, then I would strongly suggest you to aim for doing it from Top 25 BSchool in India, since only Top 25 BSchools teach you what is very relevant, industry oriented and give you good placements. Do not opt to do an MBA from any institute just for having the MBA degree.
