Research in child psychology is open to all. Anybody can do it if they have knowledge in child psychology and basic principles of psychology and research methodology. If you want to do the research academically, then the path is graduation and post graduation in psychology. MPhil is not compulsory for getting admission for PhD. Then appearing entrance test for PhD admission and submission of research proposal in the child psychology field. After getting admission, start the research with the help of your guide on the submitted research proposal. For post graduates, minimum time frame for submission of theses is 3 years and for those with MPhil it is 2 years.

Research in child psychology is not possible in distant mode because in India, no university allows this. But you can opt for External PhD. Which is also approved. Post graduation through distant mode is possible. but premium institutions in India do not give admission to PhD or MPhil if you have a post graduation through distant mode. Still there are lot of other universities which gives you admission.

Psychology is understanding human behavior. Child psychology understanding child behavior. Going deep, child psychology also studies about the psychological problems related to children. That means it is related to mental health. That is why it is important in clinical aspect. Therefore, thorough training is required to master the subject. Without thorough knowledge about the subject, research becomes futile and the doctoral committee which gives you doctorate, never gets satisfied. Therefore, distant education, may not be suitable for your need. But, if you have the capability in you, if you are sure that you shall gain more and more knowledge externally, you surely can go for distant post graduation in psychology or applied psychology.

Foreign universities do provide admission for Indian Psychology Students if the student is able to prove his worth. I don't think you want admission in just any foreign university. But you want admission in a premium university. Then, you need to get a degree from a good college and university in India with good marks. IGNOU does not provide psychology honours.
