Research first, about the scope that Sociology has and once you are convinced, only then you could convince them that the field is something you can make a career successfully in.
Please note that a sociology graduate can find employment not only in NGOs but also in corporates in their Corporate Social Responsibility ( CSR) department. Apart from it various government organizations, media houses etc also employ a sociologists.
But please note, just a Graduation degree wont help. Pursue a Masters in Social work ( MSW) or a diploma in rural health etc and you would find ample opportunities.
