To pursue career as a Fashion designer, you have majorly two options:
  • Pursue a Designing Degree course. This course would be for 4 years, whereby after 12th any stream, you would have to clear your Entrance exam, which would mainly stress on your imagination and visualization and creative skills
  • Or you could pursue a Diploma program which ranges from 6 months to a year, which you can pursue along with your regular degree courses.
Fashion Designer
Please note that though to exists in the market, a degree or a diploma is important, but to succeed in in this field, few points one needs in them are:
  • Creativity
  • Innovativeness
  • Visualization skills
  • Out of the Box thinking
  • Knack for drawing
  • Minute observation
  • Convincing skills
  • Work under high pressure
  • Being different
  • Being trendy
Though these are common things one needs, but many do not possess these skills and finds surviving in the industry a bit difficult.

Apart from this, one needs good convincing quality and high level of energy and patience.
Since the client may not always agree to your design and may ask you to rework many a times and sometimes one needs to meet the deadlines.
Also necessary is maintaining contacts.
Since this is a word of mouth industry. Remember one enemy here can lead you to being jobless too. SO one needs to maintain a humble work friendly relationship.

As a fashion designer, you also need to create your own portfolio and choose one form which would be your strength. Though you can gauge this during the course, but still knowing your strengths would help you in choosing later.
Post degree, you need to be working under a famous designer to get a hands on experience. This is highly important since it would help you to make a niche for yourself and help you build up your contacts.
Slowly you could move to be independent.
Also this is a freelance job too.
You could begin your boutique too.

Initially to know how good you are in this field, it would be good if you could design your own outfit or help someone in selecting their outfit.
