To pursue career as a Fashion designer, you have majorly two options:
  • Pursue a Designing Degree course. This course would be for 4 years, whereby after 12th any stream, you would have to clear your Entrance exam, which would mainly stress on your imagination and visualization and creative skills
  • Or you could pursue a Diploma program which ranges from 6 months to a year, which you can pursue along with your regular degree courses.
Fashion Designer
Please note that though to exists in the market, a degree or a diploma is important, but to succeed in in this field, few points one needs in them are:
  • Creativity
  • Innovativeness
  • Visualization skills
  • Out of the Box thinking
  • Knack for drawing
  • Minute observation
  • Convincing skills
  • Work under high pressure
  • Being different
  • Being trendy
Though these are common things one needs, but many do not possess these skills and finds surviving in the industry a bit difficult.

Apart from this, one needs good convincing quality and high level of energy and patience.
Since the client may not always agree to your design and may ask you to rework many a times and sometimes one needs to meet the deadlines.
Also necessary is maintaining contacts.
Since this is a word of mouth industry. Remember one enemy here can lead you to being jobless too. SO one needs to maintain a humble work friendly relationship.

As a fashion designer, you also need to create your own portfolio and choose one form which would be your strength. Though you can gauge this during the course, but still knowing your strengths would help you in choosing later.
Post degree, you need to be working under a famous designer to get a hands on experience. This is highly important since it would help you to make a niche for yourself and help you build up your contacts.
Slowly you could move to be independent.
Also this is a freelance job too.
You could begin your boutique too.

Initially to know how good you are in this field, it would be good if you could design your own outfit or help someone in selecting their outfit.

Required Skills and Personal Qualities:
Fashion/Clothing designers needs:
1. To be creative
2. An eye for color, texture and pattern
3. The ability to visualize things is three dimensions
4. Technical skills in areas such as pattern cutting, grading and garment contruction
5. To be able to draw, either by hand or on the computer.
6. Good communication skills to explain their idead clearly and persuasively,
7. The ability to meet deadlines and work within a budget.
8. Business Skills and commercial awareness, particularly if they are self-employed
9. Good negotiation skills while selling their own designs
10. To keep ahead of trends in color, fabric and style.
11. Strong organizational skills.


Job Prospects:
In India, the fashion industry has just begun to come of age, as it is still in its fledgling stage. This industry offers plenty of opportunities for talented hard working and enthusiastic people. Prospects for fashion design graduates are pretty good thanks to the huge and still growing demand for "Designer wear" and the equally outsized quantity of exports.

After successful completion of the course, you can remain self employed. Alternatively, several export houses, garment store chains, textile mills, leather companies, boutiques, fashion show organizers, jewellery houses and media houses recruit professionals interested in a career in fashion designing.


Pay Packet:
The starting monthly package can be around Rs. 10-15k. With experience, you will acquire maturity in designing skills and a few years down the line your salary would be in the range of Rs. 30-40k per month. Of course, if you become reputed designer you could demand the world.

Great fashion designers salary always shows an upward moving trend. However, hard work and a conscious effort to update the latest trends in fashion industry are imperative.
