To become a professor of Cost Accouting in under graduate colleges and management post graduate colleges, it is highly recommended to have a Costing Accounting qualification (CWA) with you firstly. Having this qualification is very much required where the courses are now becomgin very industry relevant and job oriented.

For being a Professor (from the cadre of Assistant Professor) in a management institute for post graduation, you need to be a CWA and NET/SET qualified. For appearing for the NET/SET you need to be a master degree holder in commerce / management field.

For being a lecturere in an under graduate commerce college, your CWA qualification is sufficient. For being a full time lecturer, you are required to be a BEd also. If not NET/SET qualification is good one to acquire keeping in mind the long term benefit.

You also have an option to teach private classes for commerce or professional courses, where NET/SET or BEd qualification is not mandatory but subject matter expertise and teaching in exam orientted mode is highly required and accepted.

You can also have your own seperate private classes for professional courses of CWA, CA, CS where you can teach Accounting, Costing, etc to the students.

For working in colleges and management institutes, it is recommended that you acquire the relevant qualification like NET/SET to be stable and secure in your career.

Best Luck

Dear aspirant

Thank you for approaching counsellors here. Becoming a professor is a highly reputable academic career and i highly appreciate you for choosing this career line. To become a professor of cost accounting requires a few certain academic procedures to be followed in India. i will explain it in brief one by one below.
First you need to pass 10th class with a compulsory maths subject. Then pass 12th class with a compulsory accountancy or business maths subjects. Ideally students who choose to study in the commerce group are well suited for this career. Therefore your 12th subjects needs to be commerce, accounts and business maths.

Thirdly, you need to pass a three year bachelors degree like the BCom with accountancy. Students are expected to score a minimum of first class although a high academic record is expected for professor jobs. Students can also choose to study Bcom with CA right from first year where in very few universities offer this course. After completing a bachelors course students can choose to do a Masters like the MCom with accounts. Else students can also choose to study MSc Accounts and finance where this course is relatively only available in abroad universities. After a masters degree, as usual students can appear for the UGC NET/ UGC SET/ UGC LEC exams and qualifying it they are eligible to work as a lecturer initially. In case you are targeting for a rather professional route, you have two choices.

One is the chartered route and the other is a Doctorate route. With a chartered route, students can prepare for the highly competitive exam like the charteerd accountancy CA and after CA, students can find jobs as an assistant professor. If you donot want a chartered route you can also take the Doctorate route which is even more prestigious like the PHD. You should therefore do a PhD Accounting and specialise in cost accounting or do a PhD Manageemnt degree and specialise in cost accounting. The PhD degree will depend on the university where you like to study.

If you want to do PhD at the IIM's in India, then CAT SCORE is mandatory. If you want to do at other reputed Bschools then CAT/ MAT/ XAT exams are mandatory. Alternatively if you like to do at IIT's then GATE score is necessary. If you choose to study else where other than the ones mentioned above, UGC NET/ CSIR - Management/ UGC JRF is necessary. This JRF exam will also qualify you for a monthly stipend throughout the PhD. Completing the PhD you acn work as a professor of cost accounting. If you require any further information please contact us. All the best.
