Hello there!

Thank you very much for contacting counsellors at Mera career guide and I am glad to help you get your query solved today. Before we move further, please let me introduce myself. I am Gomathi and I have been into counselling since 23 years and I am focused into counselling on education and career for students and mature employees. I am also the Managing Director of GV Consulting group based in Bangalore.

I deeply appreciate your interest into becoming a Professor. Lecturers/ professors are highly reputable and responsible jobs today. To become a Professor, I shall tell you what you need to do. Please see the following steps.
  • Pass 10th class with a minimum first class and above
  • Pass 12th class with a minimum first class and above
  • Study a three or four year Bachelor degree in Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering and obtain minimum first class or above. (Please note that if you are from reserved class like SC/ST you can get 55% or above)
  • Completing BE/BTech, you can apply for GATE exam and with that score, you can apply for PhD at any of the IIT institutions in India. You are also required to give UGC-NET score to be able to apply for a PhD at other universities in India. And if you want to seek scholarship while studying PhD, you are also required to sit for UGC-JRF. You can do PhD after Bachelors, else go for a Masters now.
  • Completing BE or BTech in Electronic and instrumentation engineering, you can study a two year Masters like ME/ MTech in Electronic and Instrumentation Engineering. Again you should get a minimum 60% in this two year Masters degree if you are outside the reservation category or you should score a minimum of 55% if you are from reservation category.
  • Completing this Masters, you can now appear for GATE if focused on IIT institutions, UGC-NET for other institutions, UGC-JRF for scholarship help. With all these scores, apply for a PhD now.
  • Send application for a PhD along with all the other exam scores and finish your PhD.
  • After your PhD degree, you can start working as an Assistant Professor and within 2-3 years based on your performance, you will be promoted as a Professor of Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering

Please be aware that some students finish ME/MTech and get into teaching immediately. You need a UGC-NET or UGC-SET score and UGC-LEC score for teaching. But you will only work as a Lecturer and not a Professor. A Professor status is given only to a candidate with a PhD.

This is how you need to follow to work as a Professor. Good luck.
