To become the professor in any engineering discipline, it is necessary to have a Masters degree in that engineering branch. for Example if some body want to become a Professor in Instrumentation engineering, he should have B.E. or B.Tech in Instrumentation engineerinjg from any recognized institute along with he should have the M.E. or M.Tech degree in Instrumentation engineering. this is minimum criteria for becoming the professor. But it is equally necessary to have the first class in both ME and BE courses. Because it is bare minimum criteria for first class in selection in any college.

For further growth it is again necessary to aquire the Ph.D. in Instrumentation to get higher post like Associate professor or Professor. So it is necessary to do the PhD as well if you want future promotions
. These norms are avaible on AICTE website also and you can easily download the same.
