Thank you very much for approaching counsellors at Mera career guide and i deeply appreciate your interest in becoming a professor in future. To clarify, you have not mentioned in which subject you want to be a professor but only said research analysis. No problem. To be clear, every professor engages in research in their subject and therefore whatever subject you study to become a professor, you will do both teaching and research in that subject. Before we move into the topic, please let me introduce myself. I am Gomathi and I am the Managing Director of GV counselling group based in Bangalore and Chennai. I am into this counselling field for over 23 years now and i specialise in guidance and counselling for education and career. So lets go into your query now.









First of all to become a professor in any field a phd degree is mandatory. Only this degree will qualify you for a professor role and let you engage in teaching and research at universities and colleges. More over a professor with a PhD is mostly employed by only universities and not at schools and junior colleges. To become a Professor, a PhD is essential and see here how to get that PhD




  • It is mandatory to follow +10+2+3 pattern or +10+2+4 pattern of education as this is the first eligibility criteria for applying for a PhD. Therefore you should have passed tenth class with a minimum first class, 12th class with a minimum first class and then passed a bachelors degree with a minimum first class. This bachelors degree could be either a three year degree like BA BSc BCom or a four year degree like BEng BTech. You are expected to pass this bachelors degree with a minimum first class if you are outside of reservation category and if from reservation category, a minimum 55% is sufficient.


  • Next plan to do a Masters in your field and obtain a minimum first class. Please be aware that it is not mandatory to have studied Masters for all subjects but it is 85% preferred by most universities to have a masters degree for considering you for a PhD degree. There are very few universities that are happy to select students with only a bachelors and no masters degree. Next comes the entrance tests.


  • If you want to do your PhD at IIT institutions you should appear for GATE exam. If you want to do your PhD outside of IIT, ie at other universities, UGC-NET is essential. Also if you want a monthly stipend UGC JRF is essential. With these scores you can apply for phd admission and if successful get admitted.






Now after your PhD you are directly recruited by universities as Assistant professor and you can start engaging with research. After two years of work exp and performance you will be promoted to a professor in research of your subject.
