Hello there

Thank you for approaching counsellors at Mera career guide. I am happy to counsel you today on this query. Before we move into the topic, please let me introduce myself. I am Gomathi and I have been into this counselling industry over since 23 years now. I am also the managing director of GV Counselling group established in Bangalore and recently branched in Chennai too. I specialise in counselling students and everyone on education and career guidance. So lets now go into your query.

I see your interest in becoming a professor. First of all congrats and appreciations on that. A professor is highly demanding, crucial, challenging and very very responsible role. Very few students aspire teaching for the development of society and i am very glad you are one of them from the society. To become a professor, you need to be a PhD qualified. Only with this qualification you can become a professor to conduct teaching and research at colleges and universities worldwide. I will brief you here on how to do a PhD and become a professor.
To do a PhD, India is very strict with every students following at least one criteria in common and this is the basic criteria to be fulfilled by every student as well. It is the +10+2+3 or +10+2+4 pattern of study. I will explain it in brief here.
  • A +10 means you should have studied up to tenth class meaning ten years of basic edu at school level and also have obtained a min first class
  • A +2 means you should have studied 12th standard, taken two more years of study after 10th standard. this also requires you to have studied a minimum with first class
  • A three year bachelor degree like BA BSc or a four year bachelor degree like BENG BTech degree with a minimum first class again. If you are from reserved category this could be relaxed upto 55%.
  • Now appear for GATE entrance test if you want to do a Masters degree as well. IIT institutions prefer GATE scores. You can also give individual entrance test as per each uni to get admitted for a masters degree.
  • After this masters degree, you are required to appear for GATE again as this score is valid for only two years. Alternatively you can also give UGC NET exam in place of GATE again. This NET exam will qualify you for sending a PhD application in textile engineering. You can also give UGC JRF to help you qualify for monthly stipend. With all these scores, you can be admitted to a PhD textile engg program and completing it you will be directly placed as an assistant professor of textile engg and after 2-3yearsof exp and performanceyou will be promoted as a Professor.
