Hello there

Thank you for approaching counsellors at Mera career guide. You have posted a wonderful query. Becoming a professor is a great ambition. I will certainly tell you how to become a professor. Before that please let me introduce myself. I am Gomathi and I have been into this counselling profession over 23 years now. I specialise in guidance and counselling for career and education choice for students and all the other people. I am also the Managing Director of GV Counselling group based in Bangalore and Chennai. So lets move into the topic now.

To become a professor, one needs a professional doctorate degree that is a PhD. Only a Phd degree will qualify anyone to become a professor. You can probably become a lecturer at college or university with a masters degree but cant be directly recruited as a professor with a masters degree. To study a pHd India has some set of rules that every candidate should follow. Indian institutions expect every candidate to follow a +10+2+3 route or +10+2+4 route.

1. You should pass a 10th class with a minimum first class and this is +10 considering 10 years of education.
2. You should pass 12th class with minimum first class and this is +2 considering 2 years of education.
3. You should have passed with a three year Bachelors degree like the BA/BSc/ BCom or a four year Bachelor degree like the BTech with a minimum first class. As your desired subject is Zoology, you are expected to study a BSc Zoology or BTech Biotechnology with Animal biotechnology as the main specialisation of the degree. Universities will also consider students with a BSc Biology with Zoology specialization or BSc Botany and Zoology specialization. You just need to make sure there is a considerable credit subject on Zoology at your undergraduate level.
4. After the BSc, you should study a two year masters degree like the MA/ MSc/ MTech and pass it with a minimum first class score. Again at the MSc level, you should either study MSc Zoology or MSc Biology with Zoology or MTech Animal biotech specialization courses.
5. With your 10th score, 12th score, BSc socre and MSc score you are almost ready to apply for a PhD. But there is one more test at this level that requires you to qualify and that is UGC-NET. YOu should pass this test and as well a UGC-JRF if you want funding through out the PhD. CSIR is also considered in place of UGC-NET. With these scores you can apply for a PhD and complete studying it.

You can directly work as an Assistant professor after this PhD at university and colleges and get promoted to professor after good performance.

Dear friend, many thanks for your question, and I am happy to answer it through Meracareerguide. Here you have not mentioned your academic qualifications and what you are doing at present. The zoologist is a person who study the animals, their behavior, classification, distribution and physiology in their natural habitat and also in captivity.

Technically speaking the person holding a degree of post graduation in zoology is known as zoologist. But now a days the post graduate (MSc) in zoology get a job of school teacher, or Research associate, senior research fellow or technical officer. The RA, SRF and JRF are temporary or time bound positions. Here the person work for a duration of three years.

To make an entry in colleges or universities as lecturer or assistant professor, one has to obtain the degree of PhD (doctoral degree). The person holding a doctoral degree in zoology or animal biology or animal behavior or animal conservation is eligible for the post of lecturer of assistant professor. To make an entry into governmental sector one has to pass the national Eligibility Test conducted by UGC-CSIR, or State Level Eligibility Test (SET). The SET qualification makes a person eligible only in the state who awarded SET certificate.

Zoologists

Let me make you clear here that to become professor in any field, one has to get experience of many years in the relevant field. The entry level of a fresh zoologist is at the level of lecturer or assistant professor. After getting some years (generally eight years) of experience the person is promoted to reader or Associate Professor. After working as Associate Professor or Reader for around eight years the person become full professor.

It is not easy job to become a professor in zoology. One has to work very hard. The person has to guide MSc and PhD students for their research purpose, publish the research papers from the information generated. Writing of review articles, book chapters and books makes the person eligible for higher position.

On the other hand, supervising the research projects funded by funding agencies, preparation of reports and publication of the findings in the journals of international repute. The organization of international and national conferences, symposium, workshops and training programs is also very important to get promotion and sustain in the research or teaching field.

Hope I have answered your query.

with all my best wishes,

Good Luck...
