Below are the eligibility criteria to become a professor. Please note that the criteria may vary from university to university and also the kind of expertise that you have and therefore I shall hereby be mentioning only broad idea.

  1. You need to have a Ph.D. in most of the cases. Otherwise you will not get the job of a professor in most universities. The academicians follow stringent criteria when it comes to the hiring processes and therefore no matter how good your experience is or your skill set is, you need to fulfill the educational requirements. In some private universities, you can get the job with a Masters only. Therefore if you do not have a Ph.D. yet you can try for those universities.

    2. If not a Ph.D. you at least need to have a Masters degree to become a professor. While some of the private universities will allow you to get in to the job, most of the government institutions won't consider your application. The other option that you can try with your Masters degree is to go for the lecturer position in the reputed universities. Once you become a lecturer you can start teaching the subjects and also start working on your research so that you can complete your Ph.D. from the same university.

    3. You need to have some experience in the research work. You may have some publications or research paper on your name. That gives you an additional advantage for getting the job. The research work is valued highly in the field of academics and therefore you will be in a much better position to get the job.

    4. You need to have a decent experience of teaching. It can be at any level but the experience is an added advantage on your resume as it goes on to show that you are comfortable with sharing your knowledge and thoughts with your students and will be a nice guide to them.

Thanks for posing the question.

You need to clarify the term professor. Professor is an appointment at senior level teacher in college or university. As per the UGC criteria, there two levels of entry, direct appointment, and through promotion. In general, for professorship, one needs 10 years of teaching or research experiences, 5-10 publucations , PhD ( not mandatory but highly desirable).

If you want to make a career as a teacher in college or university, you need to have masters and clarify national eligibility test for assistant professor. First, entry level position is assistant professor, then the next senior position is associate professor and then professor. After retitemenr , exceptional teacher or researcher get apex appointment as Professor Emiritus

Dear Aspirant,

I take your question as 'want to enter into the teaching field at under and post graduate level'.

Firstly you need to be a Masters degree holder in your respective field of subjects. After Masters degree you need to qualify the National Eligibility Test (NET) or the State Eligibility Test (SET) conducted by the UGC in your respective subject.

Once you qualify the NET or SET, you are eligible to apply for Assistant Professor designation and salary is based on the UGC / AICTE rules. For Engineering field, NET or SET are not required, however you need to be MTech or ME to get into the Assistant Professor level.

Completing PhD will be most recommended to have a secure and stable career in teaching.

Best wishes,

Dr. Anand Wadadekar
