Since you have done your dual degree in the civil engineering field that too from a reputed engineering college, you should not be worried about straight away jumping in to the management field. I would suggest you to first go for a job of your interest and then if you feel like doing an MBA then you can get that too.

It is important to understand that just getting another degree without knowing the relevance of it won't add much value to your work profile. If you are very interested in civil engineering, you should go and work in this field for some time. You should find the job easily as you belong to a good college. In case you do not get the job, keep trying for them instead of just rushing in to MBA. These small decisions taken at this stage of your career are quite important in the long terms and have huge impact.

In case you are not very keen to work in the field of civil engineering, you can still try for other jobs apart from your core engineering field. That way you will get to have the work experience again. If you have some interest field in mind, you can start preparing for that and get in to that job. If you don't have anything in mind at this point of time, then start exploring the options and apply to suitable jobs.

If you still don't have a choice of a decent job, and you are clear you do not want civil engineering in your career then you can go for MBA. Even though the civil engineering knowledge will always be helpful throughout your life but since you will miss the work experience part, your learning wouldn't be that great. You have to accept that and work in the field of management.

Hope the answer was helpful and I wish you a successful career journey ahead in life.

Hi Subhash,

I would recommend that you must gain some work experience before pursuing MBA. You have already invested a lot of your time and resources in your current choice: Civil Engineering. Taking up a job in the related field will help you make a more informed decision. It will also help you to explore other growth options apart from MBA.

A Civil Engineer is likely to be offered employment as a:

  • Building control surveyor
  • Consulting civil engineer
  • Contracting civil engineer
  • Nuclear engineer
  • Site engineer
  • Structural engineer
  • Water engineer

Jobs where your degree would be useful include:

  • Building services engineer
  • Engineering geologist
  • Environmental consultant
  • Patent attorney
  • Quantity surveyor

I have presented a broad list of options. Please do not restrict yourself to these. The job market is evolving very rapidly and one can get exposure to a lot of other areas as well.
