Hello My Dear...

When I read that you wish to do PhD, I felt very happy that today students like you are interested in research activities and would like to make this as your career. I compliment you for this! Mechanical Engineering is a fantastic stream of engineering and also has tremendous scope for research, innovation, product development, etc.

I am glad that you approached us on CareerGuide to seek guidance and the career path way to be followed to get your dream into reality.

I understand that you are currently in your Mechanical Engineering graduation. I ma very happy that you have already decided your future career path confidently and are on your way to seek information about it. My Dear, for doing PhD, after your mechanical engineering graduation, you need to complete your Masters in Engineering (((((either ME or MTech from a recognised University. Please do not do your masters through distance or part time mode since that may not be accepted by University for PhD admission))))

Since you are interested in doing PhD in Designing, you need to take the relevant specialisation in your Masters of Engineering. After you compete your full time ME or MTech in your choosen and liking area, then you can apply for PhD programme in a University.

According to the recent guidelines by the UGC, PhD entrance test is conducted by respective Universities. There are two or three papers for entrance test. This test is mandatory for all streams of courses. After you pass this Test, you will face a personal interview where you will need to submit you primary document and presentation of your research project and title. After passing the interview your PhD will start under the mentorship of a PhD Guide.

Best Luck.

Hello

It is amazing to see your interest level in doing a PhD in designing. Yes, you are absolutely eligible to do a PhD and I shall explain two pathways that you can pursue to achieve this dream of yours.

1. PhD after BTech:
You are absolutely eligible to study a PhD after a Bachelor of engineering or a BTech degree. To study a PhD, you should have been through the basic eligibility criteria known as 10+2+3 route or the 10+2+4 route. This means a pass in 10th level, pass in 12th level and also a pass in either a three year bachelors degree like the BSc, Bcom, BA, BCA or even the four year bachelors degree like the B.E, B.Tech degree. If you have scored a minimum of 60% first class mark since 10th to college, this is also the second mentioned criteria for applying for a PhD.

As you will be completing your BE in Mechanical engineering, you are most often only eligible to do a PhD in Mechanical engineering. However you can specialise in your PhD in mechanical designing.

2. PhD after MTech:
You are certainly eligible to study a ME/ MTech degree after a bachelors degree and then apply for a PhD study. Most of the universities in India and abroad prefer recruiting students with a masters degree rather students holding only a bachelors degree. However if you have a very top score in your engineering bachelors degree like more than 85%, then most universities will prefer to consider your PhD application without a masters degree. But in general a masters degree is highly desirable and appreciating before studying a PhD.

Exams for specific institutes:
If you would like to apply for any of the IIT institutes in India for a PhD in Mechanical engineering and design, then you are definitely eligible to apply with a bachelors in engineering degree itself. IIT institutes are the only universities in India that offers a PhD program with a bachelors background itself and does not demand a masters program at all.

To apply for IIT's: You should have qualified by writing UGC NET exam. You are also compulsorily required to write and qualify with a high score in GATE exam. GATE exam is conducted by the IIT's and passing this exam, you will be given a rank against the candidates who appeared for the exam the same year.

Exams for all the other institutes:
To apply for a PhD other than IIT schools then you need to have written UGC NET exam and UGC JRF as well. Writing UGC NET is for being eligible to apply for a PhD and JRF will keep you eligible to be qualified for monthly stipends.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
