To join the Indian Air Force as a Fighter pilot there is no need to do Aeronautical engineering. There are basically two ways to join the Air Force and then become a fighter pilot. The first is through the National Defence Academy after the 12th class and the second is to join the Air Force Academy after Graduation. If you join the National Defence Academy , you will do a 3 year course there and then be sent to the Air Force Academy for 1 year of training. At the end of this you will join the Indian Air Force as a commissioned officer. It is during the training at the Air force Academy where you would be assessed about your flying skills and based on these you would either join the fighter stream or the transport or helicopter stream. In case you need more details please let me know.

Dear aspirant

Your interest in fighter pilot is very amazing. To become a fighter pilot one person should have the basic qualification related to pilot training. This is very much different from aeronautical engineering. Students often confuse between aeronautical engineering, aerospace engineering and pilot and they think these two degrees only help to become a pilot. The truth is not that. Aeronautical engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the designing and manufacturing of aeroplanes. It is a 100% aero technical course and it has 100% no relation to becoming a pilot in future. If you study aeronautical engineering, you will be only work as a flight engineer for an airline at the airport or work as a flight engineer for an airline company at the manufacturing plant. So this clearly explains there is no relation between working as a pilot and technicians.

Secondly, there is some difference between becoming a pilot and a fighter pilot. A pilot is a person who flies planes for commercial purposes. So this includes passenger airlines and other private party owned personal use air crafts. If you want to become a pilot, you should go through pilot training academy and study with them. The minimum eligibility to study at a pilot training academy are:
  • Must be over 18 years
  • Must have compulsorily studied Physics and maths upto 10th and 12th class.
  • Enrol at a pilot training institute for a two year pilot training course
  • After the two year training, you will pass the theoretical and practical test conducted by DGCA government approved of India.
  • After you clear tests, you get a pilot license. With this you can work as a pilot for passenger airlines.

Lastly, i shall explain how to become a fighter pilot. A fighter pilot is completely different from commercial pilot. A fighter pilot only works for the government where as a commercial pilot works for both government approved airline like the air India and as well as the private airline that runs for passenger transport. To become a fighter pilot, you need to have the following eligibility.
  • Pass 12th class with physics and maths subject and study at the National defence academy. You will study a three year course and completing this you will be put up for one year at the air force academy. All together after four years you can work as a fighter pilot.
  • You can also complete any graduation degree and then become a fighter pilot. That is after a graduation degree, you can do the 1-2 year training course and then become a fighter pilot.

I hope i cleared your doubts. If there is any thing else please contact me back. All the best.
