Hello Dear,

First of all let me tell you that all fields of engineering are good and carries equal weight-age in terms of their scopes and objectives. But few of the streams like computer engineering, mechanical engineering, electronics, electrical and civil engineering are major choices for the students because of their wide popularity and job opportunities.

Choosing a branch/stream/field in engineering depends on one's subject interest, talent and future job aspirations. If you have interest in mathematics and likes to solve real life problems and like logical deductions then Computer Engineering or Mechanical Engineering can be the branch of your choice.
If you are good in Physics or circuits, Electrical or Electronics Engineering can be the fields of your choice.
More specifically, if are good in geometry and like to have a career in construction (roads/building/industry) then Civil Engineering or Architecture can be your choice.

Further, if you have interests in chemicals and technology, then Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology can be your choice. If you have interest in textile manufacturing (fabrics) then textile engineering can be your choice. So there are many such options are available based on your talent and interests.

Now, as far as job opportunities are concerned. There are always good job opportunities in every branch. But Computer Engineering has always been a preferred choice because of its lucrative pay packages and foreign postings. Electrical/electronics also also good paying branches. Mechanical engineering and civil engineering are even green branches and also recession proof but pay packages are not so good as compared to computer/electrical.

Once you select and start pursuing your course in the field of your choice, you will get to know more and more about that field and in the due course your aims may change. While completing your B. Tech., you can decide to go for MBA (through CAT) or clear GATE and go for higher studies into IISc./IITs/NITs and settle for a career in academics and research. So it is not the B. Tech. where the final career paths are decided. Its a journey and career paths may change while we move on our journey.

Therefore, I would like to suggest that go for a branch in which you have some interest and which you can get in a good college according to your Rank/Result and start pursuing. Once you will get into it, you will come to know more about it. One more good information, whichever branch you are having, you can always get job into software/IT industry, because IT companies hire students from almost all the branches.

I would also suggest you to go for psychometric assessment offered by careerguide.com whwre you can narrow in your choice.

Best wishes,
