Good question.

Firstly would like to tell you that any profession you work in makes you independent, as you would have to think on your own, co-ordiante with others and mst impoortantly the "Pay check".

Apart from that, the profession you speaking of is quite an independent or entrepreneur kind of job. Never heard of a company or organization running as Interior designing or designers.
Mostly an interior designer works independently, with their own set-ups.

In India, as you say, interior designing is not very famous, the only reason being, its a middle class society, and they do not wish to spend much on designing their homes, through artificial walls or decors. So the demand is generally from the high end society and media houses and corporate sectors.

Work in this area, generally would depend on how innovative and creative or rather different you are from the herd. You have to be outstanding and should fit into the budget.Your designing must be an eye catcher and must be different and fit into the costing of a individual.

Apart from this, essentially you must be a go-getter, have good contacts with all sections of the society, must be willing to work round the clock, know of markets where materials can be available at good rates and most importantly good communication and influential skills. This only would allow you to maintain a market for yourself. You must know who your target audiences are and from their conversation, gauge their liking and interests and convince them to the opposite.

There are many certification courses available which are short term courses for 6 months. But if you are looking out for a degree then, it would be a 4 years course post 12th any stream.
There would be an entrance exam conducted for the same, which would tests your visualization skills, imaginary skills and designing skills, which are in the form of a written tests and practicals too.

List of Colleges offering Interior designing courses are:
  • Raffells Designing Institute, Mumbai
  • International Institute of Fashion Designing (IIFDI)
  • JD Institute of Fashion Designign
  • National Institute of Fashion technology (NIFT)
  • Pearl Academy
  • Institute of Media, fashion and allied Arts
  • Indian School of Design and Innovation

All the very best....
