If you are starting your career as a Chef you will go through a sequence of positions and it will take you at least few years to reach the top position of Head Chef. Here is how your career will progress:

1. Commis Chef:This is how you are starting your journey. You are required to work as kitchen staff and help the other Chefs in various activities. There will be a number of small activities that you will be assigned to. For example, cutting vegetables, helping others in managing the equipments etc.

As a Commis Chef, you will be given enough freedom to learn and explore new things. The other Chefs will help you out in every activity. You will gain the experience and expertise in certain things before you get a major responsibility.


2. Chef de Partie:The next position is Chef de Partie. They are required to have expertise on at least one cuisine. Let' rel="nofollow"s say they can be expert in making Biryani or probably a sweet dish. It depends on their areas of interest and expertise.


At this time, you start to guide and train other junior and trainee chefs as well. You will become a Chef de Partie in 3-5 years of your career.

3. Sous Chef:The Sous Chef is the second in charge in the kitchen. They are expert in making soups using variety of ingredients. They have many other responsibilities as well including training, managing and administering the staff. They are also involved in planning the menu items. The paper work is again an important part of the work where they are required to maintain tha various data and information like costs, expenses etc.

That will be a great thing if you reach here in 5 years.

In order to become Head Chef, you will have to wait for more time. But if you are working in a small restaurant or food chain, you can already be there in five years. Depends on what kind of environment you want to work.
