Is a postgraduate diploma course in journalism as good as a post graduate degree course?

All good colleges of journalism in terms of rankings (like iimc new delhi , indian institute of journalism and new meadia Bangalore, Asian college of journalism Chennai) offer postgraduate diploma or certificate courses rather than pg degree courses . Would a pg diploma course be of any help to me considering that I have not done my bachelor's in journalism ( I am pursuing B.Sc).

Interesting question and thanks to you, because you made me inquisitive and awakened my research instincts.

Now what I could understand here is that, A University gets its accreditation from the UGC board.
Without this accreditation they are unable to run a valid course, what I mean is that a course from such an Institute is not industrially recognized.

Depending on few criteria, Institutes are given a gradation, and based on that gradation can they issues certificates like Diploma or a degree.

The criteria laid would depend on many factors, but mainly whether they have recognized, rather qualified teachers, at the same time whether the course is theoretical or practical and lastly the industry exposure in terms of internships etc.

Coming back to your question, Whether you pursue a Diploma or a degree is important at the Graduate level, and not at the Post graduate level.

At this stage, what is important is how much practical knowledge you derive from a course, also the duration of the course. No use spending hours and years in a course especially in your field. i.e. Media. In media field, the more you are into the job, the experience that you gather is more important being in the field, rather than procuring a degree.

Lastly as an add on, I would request, you to go through the syllabus of both the programs and based on your line of interests opt for either of the courses.
But my advise would be, to better opt for a part time or correspondence course after you get into as job and gain experience, then only the course would be beneficial.
