Doctors are always in demand. Be it in India or abroad. In order to study medicine in India, Students must complete their 10+2 from a recognized board and then appear for entrances such as the NEET exam to secure admissions to MBBS. Another path that students can take up is enrolled in a university abroad to study to become a doctor. In this article, we weigh the pros and cons of foreign education in medicine.

Advantages

  • The foremost point in the favor of foreign universities is that the kind of education offered is a class apart and the courses are customized to offer the latest information. Laboratory and other facilities possess cutting edge technology.
  • It is also a common conception is that students who have obtained degrees from another country are more likely to hunt for jobs that offer a handsome salary and hence would settle in that country itself.
  • The exposure provided by an international university is unparalleled. Besides, there are ample opportunities to engage in medical research.

Disadvantages

  • One of the drawbacks is that one would not be able to continue their clinical practice in India. The Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) needs to be cleared in order to practice medicine in India. The test can be a tough nut to crack as only about one fourth of students who give it are able to pass it.
  • Students who have completed their high school education in regional languages and all those whose medium of the study wasn’t English face hindrances. They would find it difficult to cope at first.
  • Without any financial backing, studying medical abroad can be quite difficult. Financial Aid is not provided to international students in most cases. The fee is quite exorbitant as one needs to invest about 65 lakhs to study in a university in the United States. So it’s safe to assume that it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

We often overlook our Indian medical system due to the appeal of western education which leads to brain drain or the emigration of highly gifted or qualified professionals from our country to abroad.  We must keep in mind the diligence of the Indian education system. The theory aspect of the curriculum is intense. Our medical economy is the 2nd fastest growing economy (2016).

Our surgeons are famed far and wide for performing intricate procedure upon ailing patients who are flown in from all parts of the world. Medical tourism is the term coined for such phenomenon and India is fast emerging as the hub for it. Medical outsourcing is also catching momentum where in clinical services such as imaging etc. are outsourced to a country. India has emerged as a hot since it has a qualified lot of specialists as well as the latest technology at its disposal.

Other alternatives

Since studying in western countries can burn a hole in one’s pocket and can be very costly one should look towards Asian countries as viable alternatives. Russia, Ukraine, China, Kazakhstan have lately emerged as destinations for pocket-friendly medical education. Due to cut in fee demanded by Chinese institutions and lessening of the duration of the course has pulled in more students. Whereas in Russia medical studies are economical as students who are not natives of the country receive grants and aid from the government. Caribbean islands also offer reasonable educational courses in medicine. Any applicant inclined to do in any medical institute abroad will have to obtain an Eligibility Certificate.

Points to remember

Before taking admission in a university, verify whether the institution is recognized by the Medical Council of India since the degree will be of no value if it’s given out by an unrecognized university.  A list of recognized universities is given on their website.

One should ensure that they have enough money to finance their education. Inquire whether the institute one seeks admission in offers financial help, scholarships etc.

Do intensive and thorough research of all the plus points and minus points of all the colleges one is applying to.
