Dear Aspirant,

If you are thinking of selecting a career going by the trend, then you are at 100% risk for life.

I think then, you did software engineering going by the trend and without knowing what are your genuine interests and aptitude. Please do not make this mistake once again and keep repeating it later too.

You have approached us at the right time and before taking a decision.

I would suggest that you should find out more about software development field and try to inculcate new technology and learn it. This will help you grow.

There are many option apart from software development if you have decided that this is enough.

However selecting randomly does not make any sense.

I would recommend you to appear for the Ideal Career Test from CareerGuide.com. This psychometric test will ascertain which career option you are suitable for. This test will judge your aptitude, interests, inter personal abilities, etc. After that you can speak to me through this system.

Best wishes

Dear Anushri,

Thanks for writing to www.careerguide.com!

In order to aptly response to your query, specific information is required. It would have been great if you had provided detailed information about your job, years of experience, your aspirations, skills and interests. Further I would  request your to reflect on whether do you want to change the job profile within IT industry or want to move away from IT industry to other field? As of now, I will try to respond to both assumptions, which may help you.

Change in Job Profile within IT Industry:

You are a software developer and assume that you have adequate work experience in the domain. Software developer can change job profile as follow:

System Analyst- You will test out all features of a product for any problems or usability issues.

Computer Systems Analyst - You will be engaged in maintaining of computer system in the organization.

Network or System Engineer- You will be engaged in designing, setting up, and maintaining a network.

Database expert- You will be engaged in creating, testing, and maintaining one or more databases.

3D Animation/Graphic designer- You design and create either a graphic or 3D animations for software programs, games, movies, and web pages; usually in with a team of other designers.

Security expert- You will test and find vulnerabilities in a system, hardware device, or software program.

Bussiness Analyst- You will analyze business domain and documents its business or processes or systems, assessing the business model or its integration with technology.

You need to assess your interests, skills and aspirations. For this, relevant certification to move to other field is desirable. There are very good part time / online courses, which may benefit you.

If you are working, you can start volunteering your time, skills and knowledge to other domain and later change your job profile.

Change in the field (Entering into other field):

This is very challenging and may inversely affect your career growth. I would recommend you to take up psychometric Tests for deciding career options as there are thousands of area where you can make your career debut. You need to be very careful in changing career field as you can not afford to change job field frequently. Rather than just giving list of field, I request you to go by the results of psychometric test particularly Ideal Career Test and discuss it loudly with Career Expert from CareerGuide.com.

Words of Caution: Fundamental question is what made you think to change the job.The most common reason for the job change among IT employees is observed to be burnout. If burn out is the reason, identify causes of the same. Is it office environment, nature of job or lack of competency or relationship concerns that keep you distracted? I would recommend to take professional help from counselor or psychologist.

If you have any queries, feel free to revert back.

Hope this is helpful.

Best Wishes for your career,

Apurva kumar Pandya, PhD
