Hello

Thank you very much for contacting counsellors at Mera career guide. I am glad to help you today. I see you want to do a PhD abroad and especially in commerce subject. I see there are VERY FEW options for PhD subjects related to commerce. So you should also consider doing Economics subjects in this case. PhD commerce are relatively less abroad and especially in Newzealand, the country you ask for.

In case you want to do a PhD, you can construct a topic that works both on commerce and economics. It will help you. First of all, what was your percentage in MCom from India? Abroad institutions strictly want a first class in BCOM, MCom degrees. They wont usually sleect students having second class in BCom but could be flexible if you have second class in MCom. Very few universities do this adjustment, remember that.

Next I ask you what topic are you going to do your study? PhD studies requiring submitting a research proposal and the proposal should be a mimimum of 1000 to 3000 words. Have you written a proposal already? You should identify a problem and say why you want to investigate it. You should say how your research will solve the problem. Your research topic should justify that it is very important to study this topic as it is going to address a huge problem. You should think and frame the topic from your own ideas. Read newspapers and articles, journals, book related to the study and you should identify your interest where it goes. Alternatively pick a subject from your MCom that you liked the most and try expanding a theory that you studied in that subject from MCom. so be ready with your topic and frame a proposal.

Next do the English language tests. IELTS / TOEFL should be taken and you should have a high pass. Take either of the above exams as it is important for admission. Send the scores along with your application.

Lastly look for all universities taht offer PhD in commerce.Go to the professors official pages at the university and see their research areas. Apply to those who work only on your research areas. You can also email the professors asking if they wnat to supervise your PhD.

Contact back if further questions. Happy to help.

Hello there!

To continue with your question, I have come back to you with little more research done for you. I see you want to do a PhD Commerce right? Sorry dear universities in Newzealand doesnt have a PhD in Commerce but they are happy to accept students for PhD Management with MCom background. So dear, you are eligible to apply for PhD Management in Newzealand. Feel happy and cheered now. Okay?

I have looked at some universities who offer PhD seats in Management with commerce background. They especially prefer students with Masters degree like the MCom. There are three universities from Newzealand accepting with your MCom degree and they are University of Auckland, University of Victoria in Wellington and University of Auckland. I will post the requirements as per each university for admission to help you prepare better okay?

1. University of Auckland
University of Auckland is a world leading university and number one in Newzealand. It is a top 100 university on worldwide ranking and your PhD degree from here is highly reputable and recognised. Requirements of this university for a PhD Management admission are:
  • MCom degree plus a BCom with first class.
  • Certificates and transcripts of BCom and MCom degrees
  • A personal statement explaining why you want to do a PhD and on what area. You are supposed to use only the research intent statement form on their website. You should fill up that form and upload it along your application.
  • A CV/ Resume
  • English language test. IELTS is more appreciated in Newzealand.
  • A portfolio of your works. For a PhD, you can send some of the research papers you have written.
  • Finally complete the AFA - Application for admission online.

2. University of Victoria, Wellington
University of Victoria also requires similar requirements as listed above for Auckland university. The good news here is that, they accept MCom qualifications for a various of PhD subjects like PhD in Management, Accounts and Finance, International business and marketing and Information management.

They have application deadlines on 1 March, 1 July and 1 November every year. You should try to send your application before each deadline. So you can send your application before 1st July 2014 this year. But make sure you try to frame your commerce background with the PhD topic background.

3. University of Canterbury.
University of Canterbury also has similar entry requirements and they accept MCom for PhD Management program.

The only thing you need to do is contact professors by email in your area of interest and ask their consent in supervising your PhD, then do the English language test preferably IELTS and get a good pass. 6.5 over all or 7.0 over all will definitely strengthen your application.

If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me.All the best.
