Dear Aspirant,

Generally, there are no such rigorous Physical Requirements for Civil Services Exam except IPS (Indian Police Service). The IPS requires one to be fit physically and one must not be physically handicapped to get into the IPS. For all other Services including IAS/IFS and other central services of group A and B, the candidates are supposed to fulfill normal physical requirements. The UPSC mentions these detailed physical and functional requirements in its official notification which comes every year before two to three months before the Prelims exam in that concerned year.

Physical Requirements for the IAS and other Central Services of Group A and B (Except IPS)

  • S - Sitting
  • ST - Standing
  • W - Walking
  • SE - Seeing
  • H - Hearing/Speaking
  • RW - Reading and Writing
  • C - Communication
  • MF - Manipulation by Finger
  • PP - Pushing & Pulling
  • L - Lifting
  • KC - Kneeling and Crouching
  • BN – Bending

(Above are the Inclusive list and each service has its different set of requirements)

Physical Requirements for the IPS (Indian Police Service)

The IPS here as mentioned above requires stringent norms of physical requirements to be complied with along with the general requirements which we specified earlier.

Dear aspirant, as it is very clear that the IAS officers are supposed to work at the important positions where they might be supervising, taking stock of the situation, executing policies which may have been crafted by ministers, auditing, and maintaining coordination in various govt. departments, etc. These all require one to be knowledgeable and well versed in general things of administration so for these services knowledge and skills are important rather than rigorous physical requirements.
