Hello Mary,

Yes, indeed there are immense opportunities for a career in government sector. You here have not mentioned from which stream you have completed your PG and Graduation as it would have been easy to discuss on that thread. Anyways, let’s discuss in general about whole spectra of opportunities in government sector. First upon, the majority of Government posts are filled up through competitive exams which are held by various selection authorities/commission set for the related/specific exams.

UPSC-Union Public Service Commission:

The UPSC holds Civil Services Examination (The IAS exams) through which candidates are recruited for various central services and all India services like IAS, IPS, etc. The CSE has been conducted every year annually for which anyone with a simple bachelor degree from any stream from a recognized university can appear for the exam. You can see all detailed information on the website – www.upsc.gov.in.

SPSCs-State Public Service Commissions:

There are SPSCs in every state or Joint PSCs for two or more states. These PSCs recruit for various posts for state government at various levels. Sate PSCs also conduct a competitive exam and it is based on only bachelor degree.

SSC-Staff Selection Commission:

The SSC also conducts competitive exam for the purpose of recruitment for the central government. Through SSC you can apply for Group B and Non-technical group C posts at central government and for various ministries/departments of central government. (http://ssc.nic.in)

IBPS-Institute of Banking Personnel Selection:

The IBPS conducts exam for all nationalized banks in India through it recruit Probationary Officers and other posts at clerical level. (http://www.ibps.in)

Apart from above major recruitment process, there are numerous independent separate examinations which are held by that concerned government authority for recruitment. You know, the Indian Railways conduct various specific examinations for their all level of staff. Many banks conduct their own exams. There are many public sector companies which recruit their employees through their own way; So, it’s good that you have scored pretty well in your PG which will indeed help you in your career. You need to check daily newspapers for advertisements of these government recruitments.
