Journalism is refereed to as the mother of all media. It encompasses the occupations of reporting, writing , editing, photographing or broadcasting news. With so many news channels, fashion, sports and general awareness magazines, national and regional newspapers emerging there is no dearth of work opportunities for skilled and trained professional in this field.

A journalist may work for a local newspaper , national daily, a glossy magazine , a professional journal, a trade paper or in radio or television. A journalist may hold afield job as a reporter or correspondent or a desk job as a sub editor or departmental / section editor. A reporter covers events and turns in a story about events and people.

The angle of the story depends on what the editor requires, the type of stories varies from a verbatim report of an official meeting to an account of sports event or an account of a murder case. Reporter may specialize in certain areas- sports, politics, cultural or financial affairs and so on and then only follow up such events and write about them. Sports reporters specialize in news from the world of sports.

The sub editor has a desk job. Sub editors take in the stories turned in by the reporters or correspondents and cut down or rewrite them without sacrificing clarity or important points. They check for accuracy of facts relating to dates, names, spellings etc and write the headlines. Feature writers produce ideas for and write articles about a variety of subjects of general interest. They may also be specialist in particular subjects.

They collect information and opinions about current topics and may also do interviews with well known personalities. Feature writers have to a good deal of research for their articles. A columnist usually has had years of experience of feature writing . He/she writes more or less about what interest him/ her.Whatever be the specialty , the prospects are good provided one has the personal attributes for the profession and control of language and subject so that what he or she writes is accurate, readable and topical too.
