Should I choose my career or my parents? What can my career be?

Respected Sir/Ma'am, I completed my class 10th and chose the science stream for I like science. I took economics as my optional subject. My parents want me to do engineering,MBA and do business just like the trend. But the thought kills me. I want to do what I love. I'm a good student. I scored 9.6 in 9th. I'm the school athlete and I've a senior diploma in keyboard and guitar. I also am a good swimmer. I love to travel and know different cultures. I want to help people, too. Will what my parents say right for me?

You say that you are not interested in a career which is suggested by your parents.

My Dear, please let me tell you that parents are our first well wishers and support. There fore the career path of engineering and MBA and getting into business according to them is correct. The reason behind suggesting this career path to you by your parents is very valid since they wish to see you get settled in a good career which they feel is right and proven. There is nothing wrong in thinking for the child's security, growth and success. There fore I would like to tell you that your parents are not wrong on their part.

"The issue is how you can convince them to rely and understand and make them believe what you think is right for you."

Here its very important first to know exactly and scientifically what career option will really suit you the best.

Your interests in travelling, helping people, sports, are very good and can also be translated into career, however such thing needs to be done very causciously and carefully.

If you have not seen Aamir Khan's movie 3 Idiots, I would like to suggest you to see the movie. The answer to your career concern is present in the movie. Also ask your parents to see the movie.

Hi There,

Interesting question and congratulations in completing class 10th.

Coming to your question, as to whether you should follow your dreams or follow what your parents say, is a big dilemma students face while choosing a career.

My point here is, Are you trying to revolt just because the line they have chosen for you is the common route every student takes.
Have you thought what you wish to become and the future prospects in that career???

Before you say No to your parent choice, as the counselor Anandjee has said, Parents know us very well and they being our well wisher can definitely help us make a better choice.

As far as your dreams are concerned, whereby relating to travelling or helping people or sports is concerned, you can start your own business, which may be into an NGO service or a travel agency and so on.

Think twice and best would be to confirm it by undertaking an Aptitude tests.
