Statisticians must have good reasoning ability, persistence and the ability to apply principles to new types of problems.

Strong foundation in mathematical statistics is a must. Good communication skills are important for prospective statisticians, in order to qualify for many positions in industry where the need to explain technical matters to layman is common. The person should have strong background in statistical computing as well as should stay updated on recent literature and statistical software. They should have sharp intellect, creativity , patience, problem solving skills and an ability to comprehend and take decisions independently. A solid understanding of a business and the economy is important for those who plan to work in private industry. computers are used extensively for statistical applications, so a strong background in computer science is highly recommended. With the requisite qualification and above mentioned work values an aspirant can find employment in public sector organization, financial institutions and in private companies. aspirants also have an option to join Indian Statistical Services.
