Hello aspirant

Thank you for contacting counsellors at CareerGuide.com. Operations management is a much needed branch of science and management in the present economic world and as you said it is definitely a hot zone of employment. Before we go into the query, please let me introduce myself. I am Gomathi and i am into this counselling profession since 23 years. I am also the managing director of GV counselling group based in Bangalore and recently established in chennai too. I specialise into guidance and counselling for students on education and career. So lets go into your topic now.

i see you are already a degree holder in bachelors level. It is very good to see your interest in operations management. May i know if you are currently in employment or only a recent graduate? If i know these details then i can give you better guidance. Operations management is more related to supply chain and management and it has great scope especially in manufacturing industries like car manufacturing, home appliances manufacturing, furniture manufacturing or consumer products manufacturing industry. Almost every industry needs operations management and supply chain management. This department is involved in minimising costs and wastages in making products by a company. It is a department coordinating with all other departments of a company like the hr, marketing, finance and accounts and it cannot function all alone. And for all reasons it has a great scope with regards to job prospects.

To do a degree in operations management, you can either do an MBA or a Masters/ pg diploma. An MBA in operations management is of high degree scope compared to any other degree but doing an MBA is advisable only if you have some minimum two or three years work exp. Other wise a PG Diploma or a Masters in operations management is more helpful if you are just at the entry stage of operations management career. There are also courses like supply chain management in MBA and PG Diploma level. Most often students think operations and supply chain are different but it is actually one. So you can consider doing a MBA Operations management/ supply chain management. Universities in India that offer the MBA/ PG Diploma in operations management are

1. IIM Ahmedabad
2. Symbiosis institute of operations management
3. Anna university
4. Amity university
5. VIT university
6. SRM University
7. NITIE Mumbai
8. S.P. Jain institute of management and research
9. Indian institute of social welfare and business management Kolkatta
10. University of petroleum and energy studies.

Best wishes to you.
