Hello Piyush,

Thank you for choosing Mera career guide and writing to us. Trust this reply finds you well. I am Aparna, a Management researcher practising in the UK and I am here to solve your query today. I see you are a BBA student in your final year. May I ask you why you want to switch to the IT sector? Do you think IT sectors pay you well or do you really have some interest in computer languages? As you are about to graduate already, I have two options to suggest for you. Carefully pick either of these two options.

1. Start a career in IT job: Do you know IT companies recruit students on and off campus at colleges in India and put as a 'Trainee' initially? You can use this option. Do you have any on-campus placements by IT companies at your college currently or had in the past years? How were your seniors recruited? If you have companies visiting your company for on-campus recruitment, you can apply to them. Companies in general ask for a minimum degree and they are not demanding that you should be a Computer science graduate or IT graduate to join them. So check out those IT companies who also consider non-IT, not-computer science degrees, that come on-campus at your college. Apply to them and attend the interviews. If you are selected, be glad about it. Alternatively, you can also see for companies coming to other colleges. this is called off-campus. Check if they allow other college students to participate in the interview. You can also send resumes on naukri, freshersplanet to be hired as a fresher. Just google for freshers job in IT, in India and you can have handful of jobs for which you could apply.

2. Secondly, start a career in your subject that you are currently studying. As a BBA student, in what did you major? Accounts? Finance? HR? Marketing? You should have gained interest in one of these subjects in your BBA level now and why dont you think of a job in that line? You can try for a career in IT as I already said above but simultaneously try for a career related to the BBA too. Luck will kick you with either IT or BBA degree and you will land up in a job as soon as possible. As you are already studying Management degree, you are at high prospects for being recruited to Managerial positions soon. Do you know that? You can be a Manager within 3 years with this BBA degree, compared to the other degrees in India.

I am happy you have two open options. In my view, try for a career in IT as I said above but dont wait for it too long. In the mean time, if you are lucky to secure a job with your BBA line, please accept it. You could probably learn some computer languages later and try to diversify your career in future.

All the best.

Hello My Dear Piyush,

I am glad that you decided right and approached CareerGuide.com for seeking guidance to your critical and important career query. A BBA student wishing to join IT sector is not new thing especailly when around you we see many people in IT sector and so called earning big salaries with so called great companies.

You say that you wish to join IT sector for better career? My colleague Ms. Aparna Venkatesan has exactly pointed out the critical factor behind your decision.

My Dear Piyush, I would strongly suggest you to re-think your career decision to shift from BBA to IT sector - BBA is a management field where as IT is a technical field. No subject in BBA will help you in It technical field. If you join IT sector you will be given a data entry job and nothing more.

For joining IT sector, it is recommended that you acquire pure technical It skills through courses like MCA, MCM, etc. This will give you entry into IT sector.

HOWEVER do not get carried away by people who are working in IT sector and according to you they are earning very good salaries. Commerce, Management field is also a huge field where one can get high salaries and great jobs in great companies, PROVIDED you are also a high and good candidate for them. Nothing comes for free my dear Piyush.

After BBA you can aim to do an MBA from a reputed Institute which will fetch you a dream job and also satisfaction of being into your core field in which you have done your graduation in.

Changing sector is not easy and should be done cautiously and very thoughtfully.

Please re-think!

Best Luck
