Hello There! I am very happy to see this query about Civil Engineering and about its career options after completing it. Further it is very much pleasing that you wish to enhance your career after Civil Engineering and therefore I am happy to see you approach CareerGuide for guidance and advice.

I am an Educationist and have been counselling many students in the commerce / management / engineering / law stream for more than seven years now and I am also involved in teaching and writing on career management for more than ten years now.

Civil Engineering as you may know that it is a very technical field involving lot of site work, labor work, etc. I regard Civil Engineers as Nation Builders and considering the growth of the construction and infrastructure sector in India, Civil engineers are being demanded exponentially. Infrastructure sector has been given the major thrust and importance by the Central Govt of India and investments upto $One Trillion are required in it and fifty (50) percent are expected from the private sector. Therefore there are huge job opportunities increasing in the construction sector due to the involvement of the private sector companies like Larsen & Toubro, etc.

Basically an Engineer has two major options for career. One to get into employment and another to go for a post graduate course like MTech and ME.

Looking at the growth rate and the industry requirement, fresh engineers have a HARD TIME, since they lack the employable skills and lack what is required by the industry. For a Civil Engineer like you doing MTech or ME according to the industry scenario is of little use and does not give any much increment in salary or promotion. Further doing ME or MTech makes you remain in the technical field, site work, etc only.

Today the industry requirement is of Construction and Project Management professionals. This knowledge is not given in engineering and masters level of engineering. Construction and Project Management involves lots of managerial aspects which the industry requires today but not getting it since Civil Engineers are not learning this any where.

If you learn Project and Construction Management, you can scale the career heights and start your career from the Sr. Engineer level and not from a Graduate Trainee Engineer (GTE). Below is the diagram of what is Project Management.

As a Civil Engineer it is very important for you to learn Construction and Project Management. Samvit School of Infrastructure Business based at Shivaji Nagar Pune is one Institute which happens to be India's Only Dedicated Construction B-School and offers Two Year Full Time PGD in Infrastructure Business focused on Construction and Project Management. (www.samvitinfra.edu.in)

I think as a very good career option you should definitely visit this Institute and enhance your career permanently.

Best Luck.
